President Obama’s new CIA director was sworn into office with a copy of the U.S. Constitution instead of a Bible.
Vice President Joe Biden administered the oath to John Brennan in the Roosevelt Room. The White House released a photograph of the moment – Brennan’s hand resting on the document.
The White House said the version of the Constitution Brennan used was an original draft that had George Washington’s handwriting and annotations on it. The document dates from 1787.
That’s ironic because that means the copy Brennan used did not contain the Bill of Rights — which was introduced in 1789 and ratified in 1791, Fox News reported.
Brennan does not appear to have placed his hand on a Bible, a Torah, a Koran, or other sacred religious text as he said the oath, the Weekly Standard reported.
