The University of Wyoming Police Department has accused a well-known liberal blogger of faking a rape threat and blaming it on a Republican.
Meghan Lanker-Simons was cited for interfering with a police investigation after she allegedly made false statements about a sexual violence message that was posted on a Facebook page, in a story first reported by Campus Reform.
“I want to hate f**k Meg Lanker-Simons so hard,” the statement read. “That chick that runs her liberal mouth all the time and doesn’t care who knows it. I think it’s hot and it makes me angry. One night with me and she’s gonna be a good Republican b****.”
The message, which has now been deleted, lead to widespread outrage across the University of Wyoming campus. Dozens turned out for a demonstration where one university official denounced the “rape culture” fostered among students.
Radio station KOWB reported that the anonymous founder of the UW Crushes Facebook page even apologized for the post but Lanker-Simons refused to accept the apology.
“I don’t care about this ‘sorry you were offended’ apology, I really don’t,” Lanker-Simons wrote. “You are lying through your teeth…If something happens to me, you are personally responsible.”
Lanker-Simons wrote about it on her blog calling it “disgusting, misogynistic, and apparently something the admins of this page think is a perfectly acceptable sentiment.”
But according to police – Lanker-Smith admitted to writing the threatening post and then lied about not doing it.
“The citation followed a police interview of Lanker-Simons and a search of her computer equipment pursuant to a search warrant,” read a statement from the university. “UW police obtained substantial evidence verifying that the offending Facebook post came from Lanker-Simons’ computer, while the computer was in her possession.”
But instead of condemning the student for faking a crime and blaming it on a Republican, the university is using the incident to raise concerns about sexual violence.
“This episode has sparked an important discussion reaffirming that the UW community has no tolerance for sexual violence or any violence of any type,” University spokesman Chad Baldwin said in a statement. “The fact that the Facebook post apparently was a fabrication does not change the necessity for continued vigilance in assuring that we have a campus where everyone feels safe.”
