Ben Breedlove died on Christmas Day. He was 18 years old.
Ben suffered from a lifelong heart condition – but in spite of his illness, he lived life. And by all indications, he lived it well. And in doing so, this teenager from Austin, Texas – ended up touching the world.
Ben had a passion for making funny videos – he even had his own channel on YouTube. In the days leading up to his death, Ben had recorded a series of video messages – deeply moving – profound. He spoke of things beyond this Earth.
His family wrote a moving tribute to his life online – saying that Ben had received a Christmas gift “greater than any we could have given him. He stood in the presence of his Lord and Savior and felt the peace that surpasses all understanding.”
Ben’s family discovered the video after he passed away.
“I can’t tell you the kind of joy” it brought, his mother, Deanne Breedlove, told the Austin Statesman. “It was a gift to us, and for him to be so confident and unafraid of death and to share it with other people was so touching.”
In his obituary, Ben’s family pondered the impact that his video might have.
“We know the Lord used the amazing life of our precious son to reach a weary world on Christmas night, just as He did over 2,000 years ago with His own son,” his family wrote.
He recorded the film without any sound – using note cards to convey his thoughts.
His family concluded their memorial to Ben by reminding us of a Scripture passage — “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord.”
I hope that will be your prayer as you take a moment to watch — and listen.
