The hometown of Harvard University has declared a war on carbonation.
The mayor of Cambridge, Mass. introduced a policy resolution that would ban soft drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages in restaurants.

The ban is similar to one that was recently proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. That policy would ban any bottled soft drinks more than 16 ounces. The city is also considering limitations on popcorn and milkshakes.
However, the actual resolution calls for a complete ban on soft drinks.
“Whereas New York City has a plan to limit the serving size of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in restaurants; now therefore bit it ordered that the City Manager be and hereby is requested to refer the matter of a ban on soda and sugar sweetened beverages in restaurants to the Cambridge Public Health Department for a recommendation,” the resolution read.
“In addition to being an obesity threat, soda is one of the contributing factors to an increasing rate of diabetes and heart disease amongst younger people,” Mayor Henrietta Davis told the Boston Globe. “
And just like the New York City proposal, the Cambridge proposal is fizzing out with residents.
“Here we go again,” said Talk 1200 host Jeff Katz. “A few weeks ago it was Michael Bloomberg who wanted to be my mommy. Now, it’s Henrietta Davis.”
Katz, who hosts a morning drive radio program on Boston’s Fox News Radio affiliate, said his phones have been ringing non-stop with critics of the proposed soda ban.
“This is not a size restriction,” Katz said. “They’re talking about an all-out ban. It’s Big Mommy Government.”
Those opposed to ban said it’s not surprising in a city nicknamed the “People’s Republic of Cambridge” and served by the transit system’s “red line.”
“Only in Mass-ghanistan could driving a Coke across town lines constitute smuggling,” said one of Katz’s listeners. “Such is the mind of a liberal politician.”
Another listener wondered, “So zero soda, but I could order an entire pizza? It’s pathetic.”
But some city leaders agree with the mayor.
“It’s a very good thing to try and pursue,” City Councilor Minka vanBeuzekom told the Boston Globe, predicting the ban may be difficult to pass.

Hey GOVERNMENT::::::::::::::::You can climb back out of my rectal area now. I think, as a 54 year old, I can manage to pick what I want to drink without your help. I was officially a big girl at 18 years old. You may think you can dictate me, but guess what, you're wrong. Me, and everyone else like me, will boycott, we will simply stop going out to eat or we will go to another city. The food industry will decline, folks will lose their jobs, their kids will then go hungry, more folks will be on the dole and you will be sitting back like fat cats and saying, "See, we saved them from drinking a 22 oz. soda. Yey us!" You guys are, frankly, blithering idiots.
Thanks Carlene – I totally agree
Welcome to Moscow! Oh wait they don't even do that in Moscow, Havana etc etc. Just another example of the government trying to run your life and believe me it will not stop if Obama and the left wing radicals are not kicked out of office.
This is just ridiculous. If someone wants to consume this stuff, that's their business. Also, they should be more concerned about the diet drinks that people consume. Aspartame is FAR more dangerous than soft drinks that contain regular sugar!
Hmmmm. "…sugar sweetened beverages in restaurants…"
You do realize that definition also includes virtually everything sold at Starbuck's?
All of you whining about this…….ever since bush and his buddies pulled the biggest false flag of all time…….9/11……..you all swallowed up the story hook, line and sinker. You all welcomed the homeland security act…..which right then basically ended freedom in the US. You all accepted it too because you didn't take the time to look at the truth. Alex Jones predicted 9/11 2 months before it happened, ON TAPE! He mentioned they would blame it on bin laden, or someone similar………and once the patriot act was passed, he also said that would strip us of our freedoms……..it took ten years, but now all of you are starting to see what's happening. I didn't like Alex Jones at first until almost everything he said would happen did. Then, not stopping there I did my own investigation, and there is overwhelming evidence right in plain site if people would just look.
What the hell is wrong with this country? We used to have freedom, now everyone wants to control everything, even our freedom of choice. Wake up people or soon you will have NO freedom.
In my city I want to ban the use of fossil fuels… do you think that will pass by the city council? Can I be their mommy like they want to be my mommy by telling me I am not allowed to drink op anymore?

Whew! The camel's nose is under the tent — AGAIN!
hmm maybe I should invest in a eatery just outside the city limits lol.
And here I thought when I turned 18, I'd get to make my own decisions… guess I was wrong.
WHAT NEXT? WHERE THE HELL HAS BECOME DEMOCRACY GONE. THIS COUNTRY IS SLOWLY BUT SURELY BECOMING A COMMUNIST NATION. WHAT ARE THEY GONNA TRY TO BAN NEXT BREATHING? THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.
This new "prohibition" is outrageous and will result in a backlash against those who seek to impose their Nanny state demands. Democrats = Dictators.
Is it written somewhere that being an idiot is a prerequisite for politicians?
soda is bad period. Just think about it, what is in soda: water, chemicals and food coloring, that's it! Bad news.
Does anyone remember why we had the Revolution from England? read the Preamble and the Bill of Rights..we have become what we left.
The restaurants should all strike back and ban service to all Politicians.
Who do these self appointed sugar sweetened drinks police think they are anyway? It's ridiculous. IF they really want to DO SOME GOOD, maybe they should zero in on ALCOHOLIC drinks.
thank you mayor.. I kinda got worried when I started reading this post and thought you were going to ban scotch or rum.. so since its just a stupid coke , then Ill say , "Ill drink to that mayor"..power on..
Lol
They want to ban sodas, but legalize pot. Doesn't smoking pot give you the munchies?
What a stupid idea. Freedom of choice, what other stupid thing might they ban. Maybe sour cream on baked potatoes, that sounds unhealthy. Make a list, a second from me is candy coating on M&M's let them melt in you hand like chocolate should.
I've heard that carbonation depletes your calcium, but darn it -I'll deplete my calcium if I want to! My list will include salt on pretzels, too much is probably unhealthy.
I should own stock in Diet Coke! AND everything goes better with bacon. We all need a few vices, no?
Never could understand the duplicity and hypocrisy of the left. The person who supports the right of a 16 y/o to have an abortion without parental consent is the same person who says that same 16 y/o doesn't have the right to choose which soft drink to have. Why aren't they banning beer. A person drinking a beer is more likely to kill someone on the way home than someone who just drank a Coke.
When you restrict or take away one personal freedom, you had better ask yourself a question…What's next? Are we as a nation that stupid?
Man am I glad I live in the country (rural area for you city slickers). We don't have mayors who want to decide what we can eat or drink. We don't have mayors at all. Let's ban mayors all across the coutry. While we're at it, let's ban Home Owners' Associations that won't let people put up flag poles for the Americfan flag (I have one) or won't let little girls write on the sidewalk with chalk. (Sorry we won't let little girls write on the sidewalk with chalk either, but that's because we don't have sidewalks.)
What would you expect from a state controlled by a Democrat and most voters voting democrat. They want to control what you can now drink but that ok the Democrats love to "Conform" and do as they are told without question.
Reading all the comments about the lost of freedom in America is a common thread for all here. It is a small but vocal group. if we really want to change what is happening we need to vote enmass for those who want to protect our freedoms. lets not worry about abortion now( we been fighting that non winnable battle for 30 years) , lets not worry about healthcare. lets just concentrate on canidates that will role back restrictions on personal freedoms and then wittle away at government spending like decrease politicians salary, there is no need to pay anyone $100,000 or more for life for someone who worked for 6 years in government. lets concentrate on a canidate that will reduce the EPA regulators who stimie growth and stop the insane coal taxation scam that the current administration has. Which by the way is going to devastate the people because it is going to increase all of our electric bills dramatically.
Lets role back some of the reasons business have left the country, lets get jobs for the american people, open up the oil industry lets put people to work. I can think of several ways to do it. I for one think for ever 10 people a company employs give that company a reduction in taxes for a period of years. just to start it off.
We might as well move to Cuba & let someone tell us how we can live.
At least they have free health care..lol
This is what you get from Democrats – they want to grdually take control of one thing, then another, and on and on…
This is what you get from Democrats – they want to grdually take control of one thing, then another, and on and on…
No body has the right to tell me what to drink or eat! What is this world coming to? This is getting out of hand & we need to take a stand & start sticking up for ourselves! Our rights are being taken away from us more & more everyday! WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Wai, t what on earth am I going to quench my thirst and munchies with when they leagalize pot?
Good bye land of the free and welcome to America…home of the dictatorship! The country that tells you what to say, how to dress, what to eat, what you can buy, how to raise your children, where you can and cannot go, allows dangerous thieving junkies like Lindsey Lohan to roam the streets free while they jail regular citizens for not cutting their grass! Next Americans will have an official bed time. I am so glad I got my dual citizenship and will be leaving this raggedy ass, broke down, dictatorship of a country!
This is so fking stupid, people will just buy 2 soda's instead.
Will they serve Beer and Whiskey? The restaurant business will really be crying "In Theire Beer Now"!
Where is this country going. When government, states, and cities offficials think they can right all these resolutions to"TO TAKE AWAY ALL OUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE". WE CAN NOT SMOKE WHEN AND WHERE WE WANT TO , EVEN 1 CITY PURPOSED NO SMOKING IN OPEN AREAS OUTSIDE. What has happened? some resturants want to dictate what you can eat. we are suppouse to be a free will Country with choice, but people need to open their eyes, "we are living in a Dictatorship country not because of who is in office at this time, this has slowly been happening over a period of years. All are rights as American citizens are being slowly and quietly taken away from us. And we are letting this happen. Wake up people.
First things first, no one forces anyone to drink soda. So by taking away that choice they take away freedom, even if it's just over a can of your favorite brand and that ain't right.
but it's not like they sell moxie in restaurants anyways…
Why not outlaw cigarettes, in this case? How about unhealthy foods? No buttery mashed potatoes allowed in my city, no sir. No cake either! You want to eat that candy bar? Get the hell out.
Will this sugar drink ban extend to smoothie bars?
What about alcoholic drinks, those have high calorie counts!
Hm, and I wonder how Starbucks would handle having all their sugared drinks purged from the menu.
I'm rooting for them to pass it. It won't affect me, except for maybe a bit more traffic on the Red Line going into Somerville and Boston. The comments on this are pretty funny.
And if they pass it, they'll be even funnier!
it's funny because no one knows what communism is anymore and think it's an insult.
These cities an communities that are banning soft drinks should take a hard look at how many people have killed someone or themselves with a car versus those that were intoxicated. I know, I'll just bet that the revenue acquired by selling alcohol maybe be substancially more than soft drinks! Thanks for being so concerned with everyones' weight and health, but lets look at the big picture.
Live and let live . Do not dictate!
Just wait until they realize this would means no coke for their rum, or 7-up for their Seven when they go out.
This is another case of wanting more control. Massachusettes already limits peoples second amendment rights and now Cambridge wants to control what people put into their own bodies. It is a slippery slope today soft drinks tomorrow something else then more and more til everything is controlled. What is even more frightening is that people who elect these idiots eventually move away to escape these rules then turn around and vote for the same type of idiots where they move to.
The Mayor is nuckin futz! Even too much for a lefty like me….and Mayor Bloomberg is no better.
Attention all new entruepeners(I just know I did not spell that right!) Be prepared to set up sodas stand along the borders of Cambridge! Good thing about this is there will never be enough stands even if available space is no more! Those collecting food stamps can buy cases of soda chanrge $1 a bottla and make a killing in profit (100%) courtesy of Joe taxpayer!
Don't worry….I know a guy in Charlestown who can fix us up with as much as we need….
BTW this should not come as a surprise to anyone. It was bound to happen. We have become a society that depends on the government to pay our schooling, utilites, rent, medical expenses: to educate and disipline our children, take our elderly off our hands: to pretty much absolve us of all adult responsibilites. They ban cupcakes in school because we don't teach our kids to beware of what could kill them. We let our kids sit for hours playing video games instead of Tag or Kick the Can. We have given the government the power. And you know the old saying…"Give'em an inch and they'll take a yard" Well, there ya go.
The city council needs to take a look around. They should ban scratch tickets. Because 90% of the loosing tickets are discarded on city streets. Here's an Idea, get control of all the dope fiends that are stumbling around the streets in Cambridge. Here's a really novel idea, enforce the laws that are in place now before enacting a new one that isn't feasible!

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Go back to the 1700's and chase these liberals out of Massachusetts on a rail! Hhmmm, why stop there. Let's chase all the liberals out of the country and send them to Europe and let them see first hand how socialism is failing.
Oh for corn sakes. Ok get rid of the sodas and while you are at it do away with butter, sugar on the table, anything deep fried no burgers or hotdogs nothing with CALORIES IN IT. WHEN in the hell is this country going to stop telling the public what they can and cannot have? Get off of our backs for pity sakes. Quit trying to control our lives! ROARRRRRRRRRRR
They will stop when we vote them OUT… I remember when NJ's Gov Florio tried to tax our toilet paper & soap and tell us how to eat our eggs… We ROARED, fer sure !!! We HAVE the power… USE IT !!!!
You go girl
I hear ya! Why not limit how many cigarettes you can buy at one time? Won't go after that huge tobacco industry, just us. Hey, how about how much water you can use to flush!
How about alcohol?
The politicians have lost their minds, what business is it of theirs what we drink. If you are overweight or at risk or have diabetes and hate yourself that much that you would drink this stuff, why should I have to suffer for your stupidity. Politicians you would get more votes and popularity by working on the economy then interfering in who drinks what soda.
If they outlawed using food stamps to buy anything un-healthy, the slimming effect could be huge! pun intened
