The hometown of Harvard University has declared a war on carbonation.
The mayor of Cambridge, Mass. introduced a policy resolution that would ban soft drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages in restaurants.

The ban is similar to one that was recently proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. That policy would ban any bottled soft drinks more than 16 ounces. The city is also considering limitations on popcorn and milkshakes.
However, the actual resolution calls for a complete ban on soft drinks.
“Whereas New York City has a plan to limit the serving size of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages sold in restaurants; now therefore bit it ordered that the City Manager be and hereby is requested to refer the matter of a ban on soda and sugar sweetened beverages in restaurants to the Cambridge Public Health Department for a recommendation,” the resolution read.
“In addition to being an obesity threat, soda is one of the contributing factors to an increasing rate of diabetes and heart disease amongst younger people,” Mayor Henrietta Davis told the Boston Globe. “
And just like the New York City proposal, the Cambridge proposal is fizzing out with residents.
“Here we go again,” said Talk 1200 host Jeff Katz. “A few weeks ago it was Michael Bloomberg who wanted to be my mommy. Now, it’s Henrietta Davis.”
Katz, who hosts a morning drive radio program on Boston’s Fox News Radio affiliate, said his phones have been ringing non-stop with critics of the proposed soda ban.
“This is not a size restriction,” Katz said. “They’re talking about an all-out ban. It’s Big Mommy Government.”
Those opposed to ban said it’s not surprising in a city nicknamed the “People’s Republic of Cambridge” and served by the transit system’s “red line.”
“Only in Mass-ghanistan could driving a Coke across town lines constitute smuggling,” said one of Katz’s listeners. “Such is the mind of a liberal politician.”
Another listener wondered, “So zero soda, but I could order an entire pizza? It’s pathetic.”
But some city leaders agree with the mayor.
“It’s a very good thing to try and pursue,” City Councilor Minka vanBeuzekom told the Boston Globe, predicting the ban may be difficult to pass.

Coca-Cola is legal product, FDA approved. How can a city ban its sale? How can a Mayor dictact how large the serving of such a product be sold as?
I think this shows that politicians should be banned from all restaurants.
What is the difference between these people and the mullahs in the mideast?
As a smoker I just want to say , how does it feel now. While I respect the right of non smokers to be able to eat at a smoke free restuarant , or go to a smoke free bar , Our politically correct society , made it a law that no resturant , no bar in certain states could allow it…… All you politically correct people were happy in getting your way , Our society is naricisstic , I am highly allergic to all perfumes but I have to suffer , You forgot that by taking away the rights of one group of people you opened the door for this kind of thing. Remember , When they took away certain rights I said nothing , when they took away others I said nothing , because it was what I wanted , now they take away your rights……
I knew the control freaks would be telling us what we could and couldn't eat -another step closer to communism.
What a moronic thing to do. If a person really wants a large amount of soda, they will just order two sodas instead of one if this ban is put into place. Obese people just love to remain obese and that is their own doing. It isn't the cit's busness.
But it IS the business of those who have to pick up the tab to pay for the medical issues brought on by living like a pig….
In many of these cases that would be the taxpayer…..
Of course, we could just deny medicare to those who have chronic lifestyle illnesses, right?
No thanks, MOM!
It's simple, stop electing these little Nazi fags in the first place, and if they manage to sneak in, recall or impeach them.
I see a lot of fat people eating a Big Macs, Large Fries & drinking DIET COKE. I don't think soda is the problem.
What would you expect from the mayor of the city that is home to one of the most liberal colleges in America? Would you expect Freedom of Choice? Would you expect an UNDER-reaching government?
Welcome to gulag Mass. Goose step when you walk and extend your right arm when passing city hall.
Good grief.
free market society?
When are government representatives going to understand they cannot legislate self control? If they are worried about obesity and diabetes, then go to the source. Most of us do not have a soda problem and those that do will work around any ban you set up. Most overweight people are not obese because of too much soda, it is because of a lifelong relationship with fast, cheap, low nutritional foods.
Another Democrat no doubt. They seem to think they know what's best for everyone.
We need more goverment in our lives because we the people don;t know what is good for us. Bloomberg knows. Right we need more control of the people. I am gertting very tired of gov telling me what I need. When will the people wake up and put in good people charge. I say Toby me] beagle for Pres.
What happen to personal responsibility for our actions. The goverment needs to just BUTT out.
Big brother needs to butt out! You couldn't ban alcohol…that was a huge disaster! We make our choices and we face the consequences. It is just more "do as a say, not as a do" like a giant parent. I'm 60 years old. I think I can decide for myself. I don't need some anonymous government official telling me what to do. Are they going to ban all foods, in restaurants, that have too much MSG, too much sodium, too high a fat content, etc. We are sentient beings and we really don't need an extra parent intruding!
This has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative, it has to do with control. On one side we have folks wanting to tell us what we can do with our bodies sexually and the other side wants to control what we eat. We are told by one group that in order to be good Americans we must be good Christians, i.e. their brand of Christian, while others want to throw all aspects of faith of any kind out the door. This country discovered that Prohibition didn't work, yet we continue to try to prohibit all kinds of personal behavior and desires. When is our government going to take on the truly big offenders – banks, major corporations, gazillionnaires and the like who are trying to buy our government – and free the rest of us from that tyranny? I think the attempts to legislate morality is to keep us from looking at the real problems we have in this country.
I think the city is suffering from womb-to-tomb governmental oversight lunacy. Lawsuits from the likes of Coke and Pepsi could cost the city millions. When you bite off more than you can chew, sometimes it sticks in your throat and kills you.
Whew…now how else can we protect people from themselves? lol
the land of the free and the home of the……….thirsty?
what the hell! The last time I looked I live the America! If you don't want to enjoy a soft drink with your meal, don't have one but DO NOT BAN THE SODAS FOR OTHERS!
Idiots!
The citizens could make their feelings know pretty quickly! Just boycott all city taxes until the mayor resigns! Bet that would get the city's attention pretty quick!
The best ways to handle the soda cup controversy is to issue ration cards!
Just like during the war. Each time you get a 16 1/4 ounce cup of soda the ration card gets stamped. Your ration card is for one month only. You will be allowed only one cup of soda a day. That would be an 8 oz. cup. But if you exceed this measurement by getting larger cups(16 1/4) then you will only be allowed 14 cups of soda for the month. That brings it to 30 8 oz. cups/month.
Now! You can be exempted from this formula if you apply for what is know as executive privilege. Lots of states and union organizations have received this regarding Obamacare. Just call President Obama and you will be assisted accordingly. The unemployment, housing, immigration and his golf tours (100)will wait.
The other way, to work the system, is to have eaten 45 ounces of broccoli or 63 ounces of cauliflower. This must be certified by the Dept. of Justice, (Eric Holder, contempt citation pending).
and would pertain to a month's ration. When certified you will be entitled to an extra Big Gulp in that month. Caution: The Big Gulp must be gulped that month. Under no circumstances can you carry it forward to other months.
These politicians automatically park their brains at their office door. That is so when they leave office they don't forget them.
I have an idea. If you don't want it, don't buy it.
It's time to bring back bootlegging. Is there a breathalyzer for soda?
