Curtis Johnson got the shock of his life yesterday when he opened a letter from Clearwater Christian College and discovered that his student health insurance fee was going to more than double – thanks to President Obama’s healthcare reform law.

Last year, the 19-year-old from Hutchinson, Kan. paid $600 for health insurance coverage. But in the fall, Johnson will have to pay $1,330 – an amount he said is “becoming unaffordable.”
“It’s a lot of money for a college kid,” he told Fox News Radio. “This law has not only raised the cost to me, it’s become unbearable for many financially strapped college students.”
Clearwater Christian College, a non-denominational school, on Tampa Bay, placed the blame squarely on ObamaCare.
“Due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA – commonly known as health care reform), the cost of student health insurance has doubled,” read the letter from the college’s human resources department. “In addition, most insurance carriers are hesitant to provide contracts for this insurance due to the unpredictability of the cost of the claims.
Clearwater requires all students to have insurance – either through the college’s plan or a private plan. It’s unclear how many of the school’s 500 students will be impacted by the price hike.
But the price will certainly hurt students like Johnson – who only paid $465 a year for health insurance when he was a freshman.
“The President and the Democratic leaders in Congress championed this bill and they said it was going to lower the cost of healthcare,” Johnson told Fox News Radio. “It’s not only raised my cost, it doubled the cost of my healthcare.”
Johnson said he will have to look at alternatives, pointing out that he also has to pay for tuition, books and room & board.
“I remember when Nancy Pelosi said earlier that they had to pass the law to find out what was in it,” he said. “I’m sure finding out for myself what’s in this law. I really never thought it would directly affect me.”
At least two Catholic universities have decided to drop student health plans over ObamaCare concerns.
Franciscan University in Ohio and Ave Maria University in Florida voiced strong objections to the so-called contraceptive coverage mandate.
Ave Maria University president James Towey told FoxNews.com they were also facing a premium increase ranging from 65 percent to 82 percent.
Clearwater Christian College is in Rep. Bill Young’s congressional district. He said he was very disturbed by the impact ObamaCare will have on the religious school.
“This is a very good institution of learning – as well as a religious institution,” Young told Fox News Radio. “It is a positive factor in our district and it’s such a shame they are beginning to feel this.”
Young isn’t one to say ‘I told you so,’ – but he was one of only a handful of lawmakers to actually read the 2,700 page healthcare bill.
“Despite our warnings and telling our colleagues this was bad legislation – they passed the bill – and now we’re finding out that all of the things we told them are coming true,” he said. “The predictions of how bad it was going to be are coming true.”
The Dept. of Health & Human Services said more than a million students are covered through student health plans. A spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the Clearwater Christian College plan.
HHS also declined to explain why some students are being forced to pay higher prices when they were under the impression the new law would lower their costs.
HHS did say that students will have added benefits under the law – including a rule that prevents insurance companies from putting an annual limit on student health plans. Health insurance companies are also required to spend 80 percent of premium dollars on health benefits rather than overhead.
HHS pointed out that the Affordable Care Act ensures that students can count on being covered by their health plan if they get sick.
But what about students like Curtis Johnson – who may not be able to afford to actually buy the coverage?
HHS declined to answer that question.
The college said even though students will pay a higher price, they will also get better benefits. The letter to students explained that the $115 per month charge is “particularly inexpensive compared to the cost of most plans (usually at $400 per month for an individual).”
“Compare that to the average cost of an emergency room visit reported at $1,318 (by the American Hospital Association) and it reveals the importance of coverage,” the college wrote.
Johnson, who is a conservative Republican, does have a sympathetic ear in Congress.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) represents the 19-year-old’s congressional district. He said it’s not surprising that Americans are discovering the true price tag of “ObamaCare.”
“ObamaCare is bad medicine for everyone,” Huelskamp said in a statement to Fox News Radio. “Though some young adults were smart enough not to fall under Obama’s spell, all will suffer because of his health care law.”
“Future college graduates face a weak job market because ObamaCare will make it too expensive to hire new workers,” he added. “It’s a rude welcome to adulthood.”

Why is healthcare reform only doubling the cost of healthcare at ultraconservative bible colleges? Why not Harvard or Reed, or anywhere else? Could it POSSIBLY be that the administrative staff of an ultracosnervative Christian "college" with just 561 students is using this as an opportunity to attack the president? Just maybe? Ya Think?
Yep, last year I had to change insurance because my insurance at work doubled…due to "changes" in healthcare laws. This year, my insurance went up over $500 again and my deductible went up another $500…again due to more "changes" to the healthcare laws….yeah, thanks Obama…really appreciate your "gift"…
If the gov't took every dollar it spends on medicare/medicaid every year and built hospitals, clinics, equiped and staffed them, how many patients would that serve? We could create a county heath system(it would have to be county because federal or state run would end up with too much red tape). With that kind of money, spent smart, we could service all mediccare/medicade and uninsured. Private heath care blames treating uninsured as the reason for rising costs. This is the fix, not the feds.
this site is eaten up with psycho/socialist obama people!
One of the biggest lies about Obamacare is that it will improve the system. Total absolute rubbish. Without addressing all the other damage overlaying an enormous federal bureaucracy will do and how expensive it is to run, it mandates that millions MORE people will be shoved into the system with LESS doctors. Holding your pathetic little Obamacare card in your hand is USELESS without a doctor to accept it. Those few that do will have many more patients than is practical and you end up, like Britain and Canada, with year long waits to see specialists, and even longer for surgeries. I worked for two years in Toronto and the people who had money would fly to the US in a heart beat for anything serious. We'll just have to see what the Supreme Court says about this load of crap first, though, won't we?
I voted for Obama anticipating "Change". I had my 20 yr old daughter on my health insurance before the Obamacare started to kick in. I no longer can afford to have her on my health insurance because of the outrageous increase. Not all students can turn to there parent(s) (Who practicably live paycheck to paycheck) to make up the difference.

SCREW OBAMA ANY OTHER ASSHAT THAT SUPPORT HIM! MY INSURANCE PREMIUM has already doubled, MINIMUMS HAVE TRIPLED, CO-PAYS ROSE & SERVICES WERE REDUCED….IMPEACH OBAMA & CONGRESS.
Oh please.Blame your insurance company. They are the ones that raised your premiums.Obama's plan isn't in effect yet.
The why can't I buy a Child only policy anymore?
My premiums went up $10 a month for a family of four this year. <shrug>

Funny how this is only happening at far right religious 'colleges'….
And your get your facts from???? I have three in college and we have them on insurance but a lot of their friends have gotten large increases in the college offered insurance. Funny, your comment has no basis, sorry!

It is your duty as a Free American to kill all these treaspmpus politicians…..Second Amenment Army is marching.
YOU VOTED FOR HIM HOW IS THE HOPE AND CHANGE WORKING FOR YOU?
YOU VOTED FOR HIM HOW IS THE HOPE AND CHANGE WORKING FOR YOU?
The story doesn't explain why the premiums are going up — this is a private school so who knows the reason — health care costs have doubled in the last decade – something has to be done – and everyone has to pay — I think schools are using this as a political weapon – even while they probably receive Federal dollars for "faith based initiatives" – not to mention they don't pay taxes. Much of Obama's health care plan hasn't even taken effect yet — I think insurance companies are trying to railroad it so they can keep gouging people. In France it costs $50 to have a baby – in our country – $50K – something is wrong with our system –
This school is tax-exempt which means it doesn't and can't take federal dollars….so you can shoot that comment down. Some of these private universities get money donations from alumni, people/businesses who support the schools. $50k is a bit extreme don't you think? Our oldest just had a baby via c-section even before insurance it wasn't $50k. Look to your comment, it can also be used as a political weapon. I am a swing voter, that said since you don't have all the facts maybe you shouldn't assume and pass judgement. And since Obamacare is pulling all the strings explain how this administration has mandated that insurance companies can't have more than a 20% profit margin (which they have to pay employees, leases, administration etc with). If they go over that margin they have to refund the consumer….it helps to have your facts straight before posting.
This is happening at college's all over the country; not just Clearwater. I work at a college and they just posted the exact same increase.
Thanx for the post and reading the article for what it is…insurance keeps going up and we were promised by this administration they wouldn't under this ACA
That's prepsterous. Kids up to 25 yeears of age are covered no charge under their parents plan.
At no charge? Not a chance. You usually get three rates from an Insurance Policy. Individual, Individual plus 1 and Family. (Some states may have more options, these are just the most usual.) The only way the kid is covered for no additional cost is if the family is already paying hte individual plus family rate.
You have to be kidding me right?????? Maybe you should have a chat with your parents…your insurance maybe free for you because it isn't coming out of your wallet but is sure as heck coming out of your parents. Don't be so naive…nothing is free! If his parents don't have coverage or on Medicare the college insurance is what he has to work with. Maybe you need to get a little more informed.
By the way Sydney…who pays your co-pays/deductibles when you go to the doctor or are hospitalized….my guess your parents pay that for you to.
Why is the child not on his parents health care insurance or do they want to waste money.
Because it is more expensive to carry the kid on their policy? Because the Parents don't have a Health Insurance Policy? Because the parent's insurance policy has too high a deductible to be considered Health Insurance for these purposes? Because the kid is actually responsible enough to carry his own policy?
Wow Peter…the parents don't want to waste money. Man buddy, I am a swing voter and I don't care for Obamacare. You don't have all the facts as to why he is on the school insurance so maybe without all the facts you shouldn't assume. Isn't that what you want to teach kids??? You work in a public school system. If you don't believe in getting all the facts before drawing a conclusion your in the wrong profession.
I believe that it is less expensive to have a dependent child on the parents insurance than to buy a separate policy for the child. BTW you're (you are) not your
Bruce Hoins of course you are correct no one should make any comments until we have had an exhaustive investigation by the necessary authorities on all aspects of the question. This investigation should have a bipartisan panel to make sure not one political view is ignored or valued. Then I am sure we could have an intelligent conversation about this. I regret putting my 2 cents in before knowing all the circumstances.
Do some homework, just because you believe it doesn't make it so. Like I said if the parents don't have any insurance or they could on Medicare (which he wouldn't qualify for) he doesn't have that choice. You still have ignored that you don't have all the facts in the article to come to you conclusion. Sorry to say that it isn't always cheaper to have a dependent on a parents insurance. Thanks for the comment back. I hope that small grammatical correction made you feel better!
Whether it is less expensive to have the kid on the parent's policy or not is highly dependent on the Parent's situation. And if it was less expensive to have the kid on their policy, then why didn't they before now?
Whatever!
Obama is worse than useless. His incompetence is a byword for failure. He makes promises he can't keep, and then tells absolute lies about everything, trusting in the stupidity of Americans to not catch him at lying. He's considered a bad joke in Europe – when we were there in March last year, a number of people asked us "Why DID you elect him?" I was happy to say "we" didn't, but couldn't miss the cynical derision in their comments about him. I've already heard from my doctor that the Obamacare plan is garbage – causes more unneeded paperwork, and cuts down the time a physician can spend with his patients. Way to go Obama – another failure that we're going to have to deal with.
And you get all your misinformation from Faux News?
What a biased piece of garbage.Obama's plan needs tweeking but is so superior to anything the Republicans have come up with which is basically nothing. They indeed are the filibuster abusing, obstructionist Republican Party of NOthing.
Some tweaking? The law doesn't even address Health Care except to make it more expensive. Perhaps you should read the law.
Have you read all 2000 pages. What great plan have conservatives come up with ?At least Democrats are trying to solve our countrys' problems.Republicans keep adding to the problems by refusing to help govern this country.Conservatives today are very un-American.
I do hope for you and your family that you never get laid off from your job and then lose your healthcare.Just try paying for healthcare without a job!

If you are out of work, then you already qualify for free health care you moron….Its called Medicaid…
I can't lose my Health Care by being laid off. My Employer doesn't provide Health Care, though they do provide Health Insurance. If I get laid off I can continue my Health Insurance by paying both my cost plus my employer's cost, it is called COBRA. When that runs out I can then buy a Health Insurance Policy from any Insurer that I choose at the normal healthy person rates.
How does Obozocare improve that?
Dan Johanson Oh, and yes I have read all 2700+ pages, it is one of the reasons I got out of the Insurance business. I can find Health Insurance Regulations, I can find the Unconstitutional Mandate, I can find new taxes, I can find earmarks that were used to buy votes, but I can't find a single positive Health Care Provision.
But go ahead, since you have read the law, haven't you, and show me a single positive HEALTH CARE provision in the law. Just one. Certainly you can find one in this law you are defending.
Donald Watson That is so false.Educate yourself please.
Bruce Hoins Strange isn't it that many Republicans (mandates are a Republican idea)supported mandates right up until Obama expressed his support. Then all of a sudden they were against mandate only because Obama was for them..Republicans do not care about the American people. All they care about is keeping Obama a one term president.Mitch McDonnell ,the Republican Senate minority leader has said that his only goal is to see Obama a one term president. You conservatives are un-American and should be ashamed of yourselves.
So taking a failed idea from the ash heap of history, and putting it into a law is OK because it wasn't a Liberal Idea? Really?
I don't care if it is a Republican Idea, or a Democrat idea, it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, and it still isn't a good idea.
But you ducked the question. I am still waiting for you to name a single positive HEALTH CARE PROVISION in the law that you like so believe the rest of this mess should stand. .
We will see if it is unconstitutional or not..Well one comes to mind. Not refusing health care due to a pre-existing condition. Many people cannot change jobs because a different insurance company would refuse to cover them. It's all about profit and not health care.
Until the US Supreme Court rules, it is Unconstitutional, since the Administration has neither requested, nor been granted a Stay on the ruling of the 11th and that is the case the US Supreme Court heard. The Mandate is dead unless the US Supreme Court resurrects it.
The ruling, of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, though gives us another problem, all they ruled Unconstitutional was the Mandate and let the rest of the law stand. That is the worst possible outcome for America. Individual Health Insurance Plans, Family Plans and likely small group plans will, like the child only plan, no longer be available. It will be Medium or large group plans only and we are all screwed.
This has been my experience with Obamacare. Immediately after Obama care passed, my insurance notified me that my premiums were going up 10% and they have increased my premiums every six months since then. The only way I can afford insurance now was to accept a higher deductible. I used to have an affordable $1500 annual deductible. It is now $5K, and if they hit me with another price increase I'm going to have to take a $10K deductible which effectively makes me feel there is no point any longer to being insured because I would be paying nearly $400 a month for a catastrophic policy only. Catastrophic policies have their place, but they have to affordable. In any case, Obamacare sure hasn't made insurance more available or more affordable for me. I'm being priced right out of it.
Most of Obamacare isn't even in place yet. What a dumbed down society we live in when people are blaming Obama for their premium increases when the blame lies entirely with the greedy insurance companies.
Most of it doesn't have to be in place for the costs to go up. And I was under the impression that you Libs are against the concept that Corporations are people? How can an inanimate entity be greedy? (And if they are greedy then they are really, really bad at it since the Health Insurance Industry averages less than a 5% profit margin.)
You actually believe their profits margins are<5%? Please say Hi to Santa Claus and the tooth fairy for me.Thanx.
Dan Johanson I just read the report from the President's own Commerce Department.
"HHS pointed out that the Affordable Care Act ensures that students can count on being covered by their health plan if they get sick."
This lie is my favorite. Contract law guarantees that if you get sick you can count on being covered by your health plan, and that has been law since before there was Health Insurance. Obamacare does nothing to change this.
By all means, let’s do nothing then. Let those with preexisting illness and diseases clog our emergency rooms and further escalate the price of healthcare for those of us who do pay.
Thanks to HIPAA and COBRA those affected by Pre-existing conditions are minimal. In 40 states you can already get Health Insurance regardless of Pre-existing Conditions, for those that the HIPAA and COBRA provisions don't apply to. (And the other 10 have programs in place, though not as comprehensive.)
The biggest cost sharing that affects those of us that do pay for their Health Care, either directly or through Insurance, is not those that refuse to pay their bills but those on Medicaid and Medicare. Obamacare cuts the reimbursement rates for both of those programs, increasing our costs. Then there is the additional Administrative costs that Obamacare forces on Health Care Providers, and the new taxes on Medical Appliances.
Then there is the increase in the Medicaid roles, which not only increases the Cost Sharing, but also forces mroe people into the ER as their primary care option as most Health Care Providers will only see new Medicaid patients on an Emergency Basis.
Where is this cost savings again?
Keep up the good work CJ! Stand up for what is right and don't listen to these emotional, intolerant, liberal windbags that trash you, our college, and your right to not have the government micro manage every aspect of your life. Way to stick up for what you believe!
I notice your profile picture has you and a little boy!
GOOD christian!
Really Howard? More slander? How many more bigoted comments are you going to make?
Charles Wallace — don't pay attention to the trolls
Yes Howard that 6'3" friend of mine is a little boy. I can't imagine how tough it must be to be a liberal. I mean, to have the knowledge and foresight you have, but having to deal with people like me, who ask questions that challenge your authority on all subjects must get annoying. My guess is that Howie, a kid who probably sits at his computer playing WOW most of the day, graces us with his Cheeto stained presence between Hot Pocket sessions and Mountain Dew binges. Either that or Howie is a typical New York liberal with nothing to add but cheap jabs he heard on Chris Matthews.
wow i wonder how Charlie's profile pic has anything to do with his ability to discern liberal idiocity regarding govermnental usurpation of power. in the first that picture doesn't even have a little boy in it. go back to not having a life and sitting at the computer in your parents basement
oh and howie it would be a good idea to occupy a bathtub not wall street
Obviously they are wrong. Uncle Obama would never lie to us and Aunty Polosi and Uncle Reid would tell us the truth. Seig Hiel.
Three points:
$465 PER YEAR for health insurance is DIRT CHEAP — no one should be whining about paying that much or even twice that much.
It was obviously substandard insurance – what else can it be at that price? So to meet even the most minimum reasonable standards, the price had to increase. What is shocking or wrong about that?
Thirdly and most importantly, the whole issue is a red herring. Thanks to the health care reform law, almost all students can now opt out of the student health plan because they can now stay on their parents' policy instead.
Nothing the President is about is anything but POWER OVER THE PEOPLE. That is it in a nutshell. Healthcare isn't about health, abortion isn't about abortion, same sex marriage isn't about marriage. It is about destroying Institutions to rebuild them in their view and the utopia and power they so desperately FEEL they can give us. Most don't want what they offer. Liars ALL!
My deductible went from $250 in 2011 to $750 this year. Next year it's supposed to go to $1500 and anticipated to go to $3500 in fiscal year 2014. I think I'll just go without and pay the fine and let the Taxpayers foot the bill. I hate being a mooch, but what choice do I have.
Of course it will, everybody knows that. Only born again Democrats and our lying president say otherwise. Obamacare is the sham of the century, it is a complete fraud.
Of course it will, everybody knows that. Only born again Democrats and our lying president say otherwise. Obamacare is the sham of the century, it is a complete fraud.
Mitt Romney will correct this idiocy before February 1, 2013.
The US Supreme Court will correct it in the next 30-45 days.
Steve Mansfield – You are the idiot! If the parents plan is not a group plan, which many are not, the child up to age 26 is not guaranteed coverage and the pre existing condition waiver does not apply; learn how to research before you open your mouth.
People like Steve Mansfield are destroying the US. These people have zero knowledge and they vote….. Sick and the end of a fine nation.
We would know ah? Lol xoxo
obama is hubris….
please God get rid of that terrorist sob in dc before he kills all of us.
Funny how they don't say WHY it doubled their costs…they know they can just get away with raising the premium and yelling "Obamacare did it" without giving the reasoning behind it. I somehow doubt that the ACA is responsible for doubling the insurance premiums on a policy covering a typically healthy group of teenagers to 20-somethings.
Of course it can be directly attributed to Obamacare. The amount of risk the Insurance Comapny is exposed to is, thanks to Obamacare, now unlimited. (Which is significantly more than 90+% of healthy 20 somethings need.)
Really? Where was their proof for that again? My point is that they could say "We're doubling premiums because it rained too much this year" and point out that it rained twice as much as last year. They give about as much support for the statement.
Where is the proof that it isn't? I never said it can be proven or dis-proven, I said the cost increase can be directly attributed to Obamacare.
Right and the cost could be directly attributed to it raining too much this year because more flowers grew and more people had their asthma/allergies exacerbated causing them to go to more doctor's appointments and require more treatment. Thus, we had to raise premiums.
See how we can explain anything without actual proof (pollen load, number of patients with asthma, number of dr visits compared to previous years, timing of visits with allergy season) to back it up? The insurance carrier knows they have a captive audience so they can jack up their premiums and deflect everyone's anger towards "Obamacare" rather than focusing on the fact that they just doubled their premiums.
you stupid young punks voted for him,, so shut up and pay whatever it costs,, quit your beeatching.
Yeah, if they had just voted McCain/Palin, they could be getting shot at in another made up war!
how can this be,, we were told………………………………..lololol.

After reading these idiotic posts, I now understand why FOX has disallowed COMMENTS on most threads!
Since this is on Fox, I don't trust it. There is something tainted about this article.
Then why did you read it?
What the article doesn't mention is that the insurance is better. The reason for the increase is that they can't get away with crap insurance that will only covers ache.
Also most kids will get real insurance on their parents plan, something that was not possible before Obamacare.
But I would agree, I wish the Heritage Foundation had stayed the heck out of the Health Insurance business. Newt as well.
Well duh!
Go CJ! I'm so proud to call you my friend. Keep up the good work, buddy!
Go CJ! I'm so proud to call you my friend. Keep up the good work, buddy!
why isn't this student covered under his parents health coverage? what happens when the supreme court rules obama care illegal? who thinks health care costs will go down?
