As many as 100 high school students walked out of a national journalism conference after an anti-bullying speaker began cursing, attacked the Bible and reportedly called those who refused to listen to his rant “pansy assed.”

The speaker was Dan Savage, founder of the “It Gets Better” project, an anti-bullying campaign that has reached more than 40 million viewers with contributors ranging from President Obama to Hollywood stars. Savage also writes a sex advice column called “Savage Love.”

Savage, and his husband, were also guests at the White House for President Obama’s 2011 LGBT Pride Month reception. He was also invited to a White House anti-bullying conference.

Savage was supposed to be delivering a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. But it turned into an episode of Christian-bashing.

Rick Tuttle, the journalism advisor for Sutter Union High School in California, was among several thousand people in the audience. He said they thought the speech was one thing – but it turned into something else.

“I thought this would be about anti-bullying,” Tuttle told Fox news. “It turned into a pointed attack on Christian beliefs.”

Tuttle said a number of his students were offended by Savage’s remarks – and some decided to leave the auditorium.

“It became hostile,” he said. “It felt hostile as we were sitting in the audience – especially towards Christians who espouse beliefs that he was literally taking on.”

Tuttle said the speech was laced with vulgarities and “sexual innuendo not appropriate for this age group.” At one point, he said Savage told the teenagers about how good his partner looked in a speedo.

The conservative website CitizenLink was the first to report about the controversy. They interviewed a 17-year-old girl who was one of students who walked out of the auditorium.

“The first thing he told the audience was, ‘I hope you’re all using birth control,’” she told CitizenLink. “he said there are people using the Bible as an excuse for gay bullying, because it says in Leviticus and Romans that being gay is wrong. Right after that, he said we can ignore all the (expletive deleted) in the Bible.”

As the teenagers were walking out, Tuttle said that Savage heckled them and called them pansy-assed.

“You can tell the Bible guys in the hall they can come back now because I’m done beating up the Bible,” Savage said as other students hollered and cheered. “It’s funny as someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansy-assed people react when you push back.”

The executive director of the National Scholastic Press Association provided Fox News with joint statement from the Journalism Education Association that was sent to members – after a number of people complained about Savage’s remarks.

“We appreciate the level of thoughtfulness and deliberation regarding Dan Savage’s keynote address,” the NSPA wrote. “some audience members who felt hurt by his words and tone decided to leave in the middle of his speech, and to this, we want to make our point very clear: While as a journalist it’s important to be able to listen to speech that offends you, these students and advisers had simply reached their tolerance level for what they were willing to hear.”

The NSPA said they did not have a prior transcript of Savage’s speech and that wish “he had stayed more on target for the audience of teen journalists.” They also said it provided a “teachable moment” for students.

As for Savage’s attack on people of faith?

“While some of his earlier comments were so strongly worded that they shook some of our audience members, it is never the intent of JEA or NSPA to let students get hurt during their time at our conventions,” they wrote.

However, not once did the NSPA or the JEA offer any apologies to the students or faculty advisors or anyone else in attendance.

Savage did offer a sarcastic apology “if I hurt anyone’s feelings.”

“But I have a right to defend myself and to point out the hypocrisy of people who justify anti-gay bigotry by pointing to the Bible and insisting we must live by the code of Leviticus on this one issue and no other.”

Tuttle said that he “felt duped” by the event. “There were Christian schools who went to the conference. To have this happen was disappointing and shocking.”

The NSPA said they should have done a better job preparing schools for what to expect.

For his part, Tuttle said that he will definitely be more cautious about the speakers at future conventions.Tuttle related how Savage told students that for a number of years he was not allowed in schools. He told the students that because it’s gained national acceptance “he’s reveling in the fact that it’s basically a middle finger to all those teachers and administrators who wouldn’t let him have access to those students before.”

But for some of Tuttle’s students – they felt like the anti-bullying activist was in fact – the bully.

  1. I think what this man said and did is wrong! How can some one give a speech on ANTI-BULLING but be the bully…What is a bully some one who calls names and puposely brings people down! I am a christan and know that there are alot who are not but that is not the point here! The piont is to bully someone for anything (religin, race, etc) is just wrong! I don't have anything against gay and would never hurt someone like this man did!

  2. The anti-bullying initiative can't propagate itself without the institution of government, which is the most notorious bully in human history; as such, it is an initiative that is inherently hypocritical, and doomed to fail. The irony of being ostensibly held against their will for 12 years while having to endure a bunch of pedagogical crap about not being a bully will not be lost on these young people, even if they don't explicitly vocalize it; the sub-conscious is perceptive about these things.

In short, Dan Savage's apparent hypocrisy here should be no surprise; it is an embodiment of greater hypocrisy of the entire scampaign.

  3. what a f-cking joker he is….this guy is nothing but an asshole…and 4 him 2 talk bout our freedom well in that case I love my freedom so that means I keep all my f-cking GUNS……AND SO WILL EVERY OTHER LAW ABIDING AMERICAN………..give me a hell ya………

  4. He doesn't sound very "tolerant". I thought the It Gets Better pledge said "everyone deserves to be respected for who they are". He seems very comfortable insulting and putting down those who may disagree with his views. I think that makes him the "bully" here. I lost respect for him, just listening to his language and attitude he was projecting towards his audience. Not professional, not respectable, and a foul mouth too. Do you think the High School Principle or a teacher would get away with speaking like this in front of our students? No he would be FIRED almost immediately. He should use some discretion and humility, that might be more attractive to his audience. Yes, we need to lift this man up in our prayers for sure.

  7. Church it is time we come together and grow as one in God. we raise up and stand against what we belive and what the truth is. AS PAUL DID IN ACTS WE MUST DO AS WELL TURN THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN. THE WORLD HAS TURNED THE CHURCH UPSIDE DOWN FOR SOME TIME NOW. ITS TIME TO START FIGHTING WITH THE AUTHORITY AND POWER JESUS GAVE US. BEING GAY IS A SIN. ARE WE TO STILL LOVE THE PEOPLE YES. SOME ONE HAS TO. WE ARE TO SHOW THEM CHRIST IN US. THE BIBLE SAYS TO LOVE ARE ENEMYS. ALLOW THIS MAN TO BRING THE GOOD OUT IN YOU NOT THE BAD. IM PROUD OF THEM YOUNG CHRISTIANS WHO GOT UP AND WALK OUT. THEY WERE NOT WEAL BUT OBEDEDNT TO THE WORD OF GOD. THE TURN THE OTHER CHEEK. IT IS NOT TOO LATE FOR US. WE HAVE JUST FORGOTTEN WHO WE REALLY ARE. WE R ONE IN CHRIST. WE ARE JEUS BODY AND HE IS THE HEAD WE ARE NOT FOLLOWER WE ARE LEADERS. RISE UP THE BIBLE IS COMING ALIVE MORE AND MORE EVERY DAY. THE GREAT REBEL AGAINST GOD IS TAKING PLACE MORE NOW THEN EVER. SEEK YOUR FATHER BE IN PRAYER IN WORSHIP IN GODS WORD GET READY BECAUSE THE RAIN IS COMING AND THE DRY BONES WILL COME ALIVE..

    • We're all born sinners. Besides, I think people that are gay are born that way. I never remember a time in my life when I made the choice to like boys or girls. I just liked girls. Their was no thought process behind I was just attracted to girls.

    • Jacob Lippincott yes we are all born as sinners because of the fall of man with Adam. how every if a person belives on part or one word of the bible then you will also belive the whole bible. Man and women are not born gay. just as the bible say God made Adam and eve. the world science has try to make up these things to go agaisnt God and what the bible says like they try to say we came from monkeys. It is false we were created in Gods image. It is sin to be gay just as its a sin to lie and cheat God dont look at no sin greater then the other. I am a sinner every day just as you and all people the bibke says we all fall short the glory of God. and another place if you claim you are with out sin you are a liar. Thats why Jesus came because we had no way out of sin. He gave his life for you and me to clean us from our sin. I have friends who are gay and they will agree they were not born gay they were hurt buy men or women and like it better with the same sex now. but still again i am not here to attack the gay. but, defending the faith that i do LOVE that it is in fact a sin to be gay. but they are still people who we as christians must love. we dont love the sin but must love and pray for the person. ill be praying for you young man that you may find the truth your looking for. there must be something because this did get your attention.

  17. Dan Savage was spot on to call Christians into account for using the Bible to bully people. And saying "bullshit" to a group of teenagers isn't exactly something they haven't heard before.

  18. The left/democrats are the biggest bullies around, and it's not even close.

Pneumocystis pneumonia in the United States is almost exclusively limited to severely immunosuppressed patients (1). The occurrence of pneumocystosis in these 5 previously healthy individuals without a clinically apparent underlying immunodeficiency is unusual. The fact that these patients were all homosexuals suggests an association between some aspect of a homosexual lifestyle or disease acquired through sexual contact and Pneumocystis pneumonia in this population. All 5 patients described in this report had laboratory-confirmed CMV disease or virus shedding within 5 months of the diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia.

You know this guy is the biggest hypocrite I have ever heard about. He is talking about not bullying gay people when in reality he is bullying Christians to make his argument look stronger. Right now this is evident, the "differance of oppinion" between people who are gay and people who believe that the homosexual life style is wrong, is turning into a war. What side are you on?

  22. So much to laugh about. I'm not sure where to start.

  23. Sutter Union High School keeps getting flooded with misguided phone calls and emails from people who wrongly think Dan Savage either spoke at our school or works for our school. Thankfully, my prinicipal takes it all in stride, even if he is not always patient with people who accuse us of supporting Dan Savage when just the opposite is true. Three of our students and one of our teachers were among those who walked out on Dan Savage in Seattle. Our other teacher stayed because we still had kids who sat through the whole sorry diatribe. All three who stayed wanted to leave but felt intimidated by the majority of students cheering for Dan Savage's remarks and jeering at those who left. One of our kids who stayed, cried all through the rest of the presentation, feeling trapped like a hostage at gun point.

As far as our students, parents and teachers are concerned Dan Savage is a monster to behave that way toward teens in public. We just hope that concerned Chrisitans will actually get the details of this article straight and quit accusing us of supporting Dan Savage. We do not.

Oh you poor things. How ever will you live? The real hate is on this thread.

  25. He is all over the bible for historic reference to stoning women to death for not being virgin on their wedding night, does he eventually get around to current religions where this is still the practice? Or where a girl may be stoned to death for shaming her family by wearing a short skirt to school? Or sold in marriage to a man old enough to be her father, against her choice? How is it he does not mention that in muslim countries slavery was still legal in the 1930s, and was eventually outlawed due to pressure from those evil Christian countries. In those days it was OK to be a christian country, in fact most of those working to end slavery used Christian practice as their battle cry.

"The NSPA said they should have done a better job preparing schools for what to expect."
The schools are spending their money on speakers like this? Profanity, insults, viewing the bible without historical reference to the laws and practice of the time? Viewing ancient history from todays thinking is one of the most common mistakes of the thoughtless. Look at the medical practice of those early days, transportation… the bible didn't get the combustion engine right either…
is he ignorant or deliberately distorting the facts…. either way why is he paired with the white house and education?
    Oh, yeah… if forgot…

You don't get to do that. You don't get to excuse all of the horrible Biblical practices by referring to them as merely "historical". "To the laws and practice(sic) of the time." So you don't believe then in the inherency of the Bible? Are you saying that you don't believe the Bible is the absolute word of God? And as far as profanity and insults go, nothing Savage said comes within a million miles of the vulgar, hateful, ignorant and profane comments from these so-called "Christians".
So what of it? Do you deny the power of God by dismissing the Bible as merely a historical manuscript, and thereby deny the existence of the Trinity? Or do you believe in its' inherency? By which you agree that the practices in Biblical times should be applied to current times which pretty much makes what you're doing here punishable by stoning.

it that the guy REALname dan savage or did he change it? He sure got the the right name: savage. As in nasty, piece of work. and these are the people who leading the anti-bully campagin. WHo hates himself and everyone one else who not a gay!

    • Andrew Salazar /

Your picture is the gayest thing I've seen all day.
Obviously you have an issue. Small penis? Short-man's disease? Molestered as a youth by your pastor or priest? Yeah, you've got something going on there.

  31. Apparently Savage actually isn't opposed to bullying, he just wants to be the one doing it.

  32. Andrew Salazar /

What a bunch of whiners. Now I understand why these teens – who happend to be very close to adulthood – acted so imaturely.
The REAL hate is on this thread by people who are praising Jesus with one hand and giving Him a black eye with the other. What Savage said was mild. And true. You people focus on one thing to the exclusion of all others.

    • Walt Fritsch /

      Calling BS on that.
      Savage is a hypocritical turd.

    • Andrew Salazar /

Walt Fritsch HA! LOL. What the heck. Didn't know my FB friends could see this thread. Thought I had requested it not post on my FB. Better try again cause I'm about to release the hounds.

    • Andy you know I am a Christian, so you should know my beliefs when it comes to being gay. However, I am not a bigot because of it. And in this article Mr. Savage calls those who believe being gay to be wrong by what is written in the Bible are showing anti-gay bigotry. Just because one doesnt believe in it doesnt mean they are showing bigotry. I treat people the way I want to be treated regardless of what your belief is or your life style. A true Christian should show love to all people whether they follow the Bible or not. Now one thing I didnt like in this article is the fact that this was suppose to be an anti-bullying conference. And it turned out to be just the opposite. What Mr. Savage said about gays being bullied is spot on and I agree no one should ever be discriminated against or treat as such, but he did the same thing himself by the way he treated these young adults/teenagers. It would appear as if Mr. Savage doesnt practice what he is preaching. And what he wants for gays he himself doesnt want to give back for those that dont believe in it. Sad situation all the way around. I wont judge but I will be praying.

    • Andrew Salazar /

Don Stanley Thanks for your comment, Don. Dan isn't calling people anti-gay bigots who believe homosexuality is wrong because of what they read in the Bible. His message was for those who use the Bible as an excuse to spread their anti-gay bigotry. For example: The American "Family" Association. Dan was pointing out that groups like the AFA use the Bible to push their anti-gay meme to pass descrimatory laws all across this nation. They are supposed to be a Chrisitian org yet they spread lies and misinformation about LGBT people. They do a huge injustice to the society they profess they want to save by publishing misinformation about AIDS. And they do this to the exclusion of every other sin listed in Deuteronomy and other parts of the Old and New Testament.
Did you watch the unedited video of Dan's statement? I would imagine a thoughtful person such as yourself could see past his moment of rudeness to understand his larger point. Also, Dan has publicly apologized to the students for being rude and admitted he was acting like a bully for which he also apologized.

  33. Andrew Salazar /

The fact that have an opposition to homosexuality is not the problem. The problem is the fact that you ACTIVELY oppose it. You don't merely disagree. You actively disagree. You want laws passed which enshrine into law your personal religious beliefs. You people have forgotten that you all live in America where you or I are not supposed to use the gov't to force others to follow your/my demented and twisted belief system. It's one thing to say you don't believe homosexuality is the correct course for humans but at the same time these people are your fellow Americans who have a right to exist and be protected by the same laws they and their kin have fought and bled and died for right along side mine. They have a right to the same rights and privileges as a legally born, tax-paying citizen.
BUT YOU DON'T! NOOOO. You don't wish to co-exist with gay people….or brown people or black people or anyone who isn't just like you. So you fight to enshrine bigotry and homophobia into the Constitution. You vote not to extend the same rights but to take away rights of your fellow gay. Americans. You march and carry signs while spewing the same horrible and hateful rhetoric on this thread. The same mouth you claim to praise and love Jesus with — the Prince of Peace. You're the same people who have openly said that America should nuke the Middle East and turn it in to a "sea of glass". How the Prince of Peace must be so proud of His people. He must bask in the glow that so much ignorance and hate is spoken in His name.
    See you all in Hell.

    • Walt Fritsch /

Do you feel the same way about Muslims, Andrew? I mean,in Iran, they hang gays in public right alongside drug dealers AND Christians (Bahii's (sp?) too.).
How come you don't criticize other religions and their followers when it comes to your rants? Is it because Christians are an easy target? Grow a pair and go after the 'Religion of Peace' for a change.

    • Andrew Salazar /

Walt Fritsch One subject at a time my friend. If you have a problem with the contents of my post then say so. But don't try to change the subject. I am speaking directly to these people. About this subject. I am happy to have that discussion with you although I think you already knew the answer to your question before you asked it.

And btw, my comment is not a rant. And these people aren't Christians. Read just 3 or four comments and tell me if you think if Jesus looked at theses people would he see His reflection.

  34. Mike Carter /

So he arrives to give an anti-bullying speech, proceeds to bully Christians, and nothing is done about it? And the conference defends his actions? Hypocritical. Appalling.

  35. Oh to have been there and demonstrated how I used to stand up to bullies. He is a bully who hides behind his civil rights. Talk like that in front of my Christian child, and I'll forget that Jesus said to turn the other cheek. And the organizers should have offered sincere apologies.

  36. I had to laugh at his qoute about birth control why does he worry about it u can`t get pregnate through the anus.then talks about getting sick well i`m sure aids fits in his actions. jesus never talked about homosexuality but he was a jew and would have followed SOME the law but this idiot makes a mistake jesus was the LAW(. don`t think I have come to change one jot or titel of the law I have come to fulfill the law). u can tell he never read the bible because of his life style.the holy sprit gives him no guidence. and as far as slavery read what it says about slave in the N.T. SHOWS HIS IGNORENCE.

    • Buy you should learn how to spell ignorance…first before you answer someone's post…

    • That's the only thing you have to say? To correct spelling? No substantive discussion? You are a joke. At least take exception to his argument Kelly. Geez. #conservatives #comedy

  37. Hypocrisy (hi-pok-ruh-see) n. A grown man using a microphone to bully children during an anti-bullying speech.

  38. fellow christians fear not! we've read the end of the book! praise God and his son Jesus!

  39. what a total LIAR! he has the nerve to judge the bible and say it was wrong on slavery without a single supporting statement? because there is no statement in the bible that is wrong unless he takes it utterly out of context. just because the bible addresses slaves and how they are to behave in their situation of bond, and just how it addresses how one living in occupation of a foreign government such as ceasar's, does not mean it condones those situations either way; it merely addresses them as existing situations! This guy is speaking only to an audience who is unfamiliar enough with the bible to operate on misused soundbites. He is insulting and a false prophet. The students who left, behaved properly, because there is no point in staying once a person with bad intentions has even made it clear that this is his his intention. They were brave to take their stand by refusing to participate any further. Well done.

    • That is just what I was thinking but you put it so well. It has to do with living together in society in peace and submitting to the authorities that God has put in place, where a slave should respect his master or an employee should respect his boss…

    • He's actually 100000% right on the biblical justification of slavery.

HAVE YOU READ the many scriptures in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Bible (New Testament) that substantiate slavery? Apparently not or you wouldn't make utterly ignorant statements alluding to the lack of biblical support for slavery. You are DEAD wrong. Research before embarrass yourself any further. I will warn you, I know what I'm talking about, I've studied this issue (as an African-American) in GREAT detail. Shall we tango?

  40. I would never bully that speaker. But I would kick his ass for making girls cry.

  41. Wow! what a bitter and hateful person! What the savage Mr. Savage did with these High School students was outrageous. To hector and bully them after insulting them during a school outing? Very low indeed. And to use the Anti-Bullying Campaign as a springboard for your own brand of Anti-Christian Bullying? Really? Your name should forever be stricken from this worthy cause, you are an embarrassment to children everywhere who have to live life everyday as if in a war-zone of hate and intolerance. You Sir, should be ASHAMED of yourself!

  42. I'm glad that Dan Savage took the time to prove once and for all that he is infact a bully himself, but not only that but that he is religiously ignorant. Thank you Dan for once again proving that nothing is proved by bashing the bible and the people that believe in it. Because your actions lead to no one taking you seriously. I know people in the audience people were yelling and screaming for your point, but fyi…….those were the bullies you supposed to be talking against. The people that cheer for any sort of hate are the same people that bully these kids you want to protect. So when you think your proving a point your simply pushing the point that it is infact ok to bully people as long as you don't like what they stand for. If anything you basically gave people freedom to bully or bash anyone for any reason. Also I'd just like to know where it was said out loud that the EVERYONE who EVER bullied a gay or lesbian teen was a bible thumping Christian fanatic. Or was this just your pathetic try at putting the blame all on Christians because your facing a nameless, faceless, and evil thing. Here is a quick news flash Christians aren't the only ones that bully and don't like gay and lesbian ways of life. So in summary I'd like that add that you have lived your life bashing the bible and the Christian religion. I'm sorry, that must be a terrible life to have to live. Every day having to defend being gay and bashing others to do so. So I offer you this. So you want to hear something from a Christian….You want to hear something for someone who would stand against you without violence. "I pray Lord that you put your hand on Dan's heart. I pray God that you would help him in his travels. I pray that you would show him the way, the truth, and the life. Through you God all things are possible, and through you I ask for forgiveness for what was said to those people and against you God. I ask that you forgive Dan for what he has done because he does not know what he is doing because he has not seen the love, life and forgiveness of accepting you into his life. Please Lord bless this man and show him your grace in hopes he would turn to you for forgiveness and that he will learn how to live a better life in your eyes. Please God bless him and keep him, and forgive him. In Jesus name I pray. AMEN!"

  43. Kyle, you are ignorant and very evidently uneducated on "Christians". I am not a hypocrite and people like you that attempt to "label" groups of people don't even realize how futile and stupid that is. Men with men and women with women cannot reproduce. That fact alone proves that being gay is not natural. I know, I know, you say you were born that way and can't help it. I am a Christian, We feed over 500 hungry families every week. Come to my house or church, would love to have this conversation face to face. Because for sure, I won't see you in heaven. BTW, I am not judging you, I am re-stating the obvious. Christians never judge people. All we want to do is educate you that Jesus has written the check, all you have to do is cash it. Be reborn, have faith in God and your life will change for the better. I love you Kyle.

  45. WOW, go to hear a speach against bullying, only to be bullied. I guess that some people believe that only they can be bullied, and no one else counts. I can believe that Mr. Savage was bullied when he was young. I can see where his hatred might come from. But becoming the thing you hate was never the answer.

While I do think his comments were out of place, you can't judge an entire group of people (LGBT people in this case) on the actions and words of just ONE individual. For example, Pat Robertson made EXTREMELY insensitive comments about the Haiti earthquake of 2010 and said that 911 was caused by "pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, the American Civil Liberties Union and the People For the American Way." However, no one judges the entire Christian community based on one bigot's comments. Therefore, you shouldn't judge the entire LGBT rights movement on Dan Savage's actions. Thank you :)

  47. Did any of you actually listen to the speech – or just read what angry and biased people wrote about it? Watch the video on YouTube – it was not that bad at all. It was entirely calm and rational. He makes good points. Christianity is an outdated religion that serves no real purpose but to those who have blind faith. It is nothing but simple answers for simple people. It was written thousands of years ago on the other side of the planet, which was believed to be flat, and spoke to the social politics of a totally different time and place. We are living in the SECOND DECADE of the 21st CENTURY. Let's make progress and stop living in the past. Open up a little – or at least wait for the Second Coming of Christ. I'm sure even He would say it's okay to be gay – but the lost flock will not know this until an authority figure tells them this…

I agree with what Dan said, however, I am sadden by the way he delivered his message.

I thought he did fine. lol Ignore the bullshit. The bible did things wrong. Let pansy-assed Christians run for cover. :p

  49. Figures. This guy demands tolerance (actually, unconditional acceptance) of his sexuality, but shows no tolerance (actually hostility) of persons' religious beliefs. Sorry, dude or dudette, but your movement is going to have to learn to play a little nicer for its own good.
