As many as 100 high school students walked out of a national journalism conference after an anti-bullying speaker began cursing, attacked the Bible and reportedly called those who refused to listen to his rant “pansy assed.”
The speaker was Dan Savage, founder of the “It Gets Better” project, an anti-bullying campaign that has reached more than 40 million viewers with contributors ranging from President Obama to Hollywood stars. Savage also writes a sex advice column called “Savage Love.”
Savage, and his husband, were also guests at the White House for President Obama’s 2011 LGBT Pride Month reception. He was also invited to a White House anti-bullying conference.

Savage was supposed to be delivering a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. But it turned into an episode of Christian-bashing.
Rick Tuttle, the journalism advisor for Sutter Union High School in California, was among several thousand people in the audience. He said they thought the speech was one thing – but it turned into something else.
“I thought this would be about anti-bullying,” Tuttle told Fox news. “It turned into a pointed attack on Christian beliefs.”

Tuttle said a number of his students were offended by Savage’s remarks – and some decided to leave the auditorium.
“It became hostile,” he said. “It felt hostile as we were sitting in the audience – especially towards Christians who espouse beliefs that he was literally taking on.”
Tuttle said the speech was laced with vulgarities and “sexual innuendo not appropriate for this age group.” At one point, he said Savage told the teenagers about how good his partner looked in a speedo.
The conservative website CitizenLink was the first to report about the controversy. They interviewed a 17-year-old girl who was one of students who walked out of the auditorium.
“The first thing he told the audience was, ‘I hope you’re all using birth control,’” she told CitizenLink. “he said there are people using the Bible as an excuse for gay bullying, because it says in Leviticus and Romans that being gay is wrong. Right after that, he said we can ignore all the (expletive deleted) in the Bible.”
As the teenagers were walking out, Tuttle said that Savage heckled them and called them pansy-assed.
“You can tell the Bible guys in the hall they can come back now because I’m done beating up the Bible,” Savage said as other students hollered and cheered. “It’s funny as someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansy-assed people react when you push back.”
The executive director of the National Scholastic Press Association provided Fox News with joint statement from the Journalism Education Association that was sent to members – after a number of people complained about Savage’s remarks.
“We appreciate the level of thoughtfulness and deliberation regarding Dan Savage’s keynote address,” the NSPA wrote. “some audience members who felt hurt by his words and tone decided to leave in the middle of his speech, and to this, we want to make our point very clear: While as a journalist it’s important to be able to listen to speech that offends you, these students and advisers had simply reached their tolerance level for what they were willing to hear.”
The NSPA said they did not have a prior transcript of Savage’s speech and that wish “he had stayed more on target for the audience of teen journalists.” They also said it provided a “teachable moment” for students.
As for Savage’s attack on people of faith?
“While some of his earlier comments were so strongly worded that they shook some of our audience members, it is never the intent of JEA or NSPA to let students get hurt during their time at our conventions,” they wrote.
However, not once did the NSPA or the JEA offer any apologies to the students or faculty advisors or anyone else in attendance.
Savage did offer a sarcastic apology “if I hurt anyone’s feelings.”
“But I have a right to defend myself and to point out the hypocrisy of people who justify anti-gay bigotry by pointing to the Bible and insisting we must live by the code of Leviticus on this one issue and no other.”
Tuttle said that he “felt duped” by the event. “There were Christian schools who went to the conference. To have this happen was disappointing and shocking.”
The NSPA said they should have done a better job preparing schools for what to expect.
For his part, Tuttle said that he will definitely be more cautious about the speakers at future conventions.Tuttle related how Savage told students that for a number of years he was not allowed in schools. He told the students that because it’s gained national acceptance “he’s reveling in the fact that it’s basically a middle finger to all those teachers and administrators who wouldn’t let him have access to those students before.”
But for some of Tuttle’s students – they felt like the anti-bullying activist was in fact – the bully.

It's never been about the bullying, but who is getting bullied.
Like insanity, homosexuality is a mental defect and like everyone with a mental defect homos find a home in the Democrat party. There is nothing filled with more vitriolic rage than women trapped in men's bodies and women trapped in men's bodies. Dan A$$master Savage is an excellent example why normal people hate the gay mob.
Savage actually has a very good point, he just said it the wrong way. If he hadn't been such an asshole about what he was saying he could have made a lot of these so called 'christians' think about what the bible actually means………talking about intolerance with intolerance will get you no where.
Wow. I guess bullying really is a problem.
Why doesn't this guy attack the Quran with the same vigor and vitriol with which he attacks the Bible? Is it because he's the real "pansy ass?" The whole purpose of this anti-bullying campaign is to silence free speech. It's pretty simple, really: 1) Get the entire herd of sheeple on FB fired up against "bullying." 2) Change the definition of "bullying" to any speech that disagrees with the Obama administration and/or the Democrat/Marxist agenda. Just another formation out of the same tired Alinsky playbook.
I noticed that also, if the Bible is fiction and Christianity is such a hoax, why do these people attack the Bible and Christianity with such frequency and enthusiasm…with this in mind, it proves that it is true…Either that or these people really are cowards…If they sincerely believe that Christianity and the Bible are a bigger threat to homosexuality and their freedom to practice whatever belief system that they want, than why do they not attack Islam and the Quran, either they're are cowards or it substantiates the validity of the Bible and its merit in countering the spiritual, philosophical, and social warfare that we face every day.
Perhaps instead of trying to change such a lost-cause-nation as the US, they should move to an Islamic nation, perhaps Afghanistan or Pakistan. I'm sure they'll be treated with the kindness and compassion they treat so many here with. There are certainly those who spit hatred at them though, and it's wrong.
Ironic though that an anti-bullying speaker would start screaming hatred at a certain group (regardless of who/what they are). Isn't that a close cousin of bullying?
Bullies come all kinds of costumes. Obama is a bully. This man was no journalist. He was the slime of the earth and a bully himself. Before he goes interpreting the Bible he needs to understand it. As for Obama, he's after you and me.
An adult bully is cursing and bullying children as he's being paid with taxpayer dollars to speak in front of children on topic of anti-bullying…Arif Alikhan, asst. secretary Department Homeland Security, appointed by Obama, publically defends Hezbollah terrorist organization and is privy to HomeLand Security top secret info….2010 Obama appointed Rashad Hussain in envoy position at the State Dept…he publicly defends terrorist Sami al Arian and is critical of the US terror Prosecutions and has Muslim Brotherhood associations…..Obama appointed Mohamed Elibiary to the Dept of Homeland Security Policy team Dept. of Public Safety in Plano, Texas and gave him a Security Clearance and he has access to sensitive and critical homeland security info..which in Oct., 2011, he accessed and took papers (highly sensitive) from the DHS…feel safe now? Obama declares the "War on Terror" is over and I believe he is correct, because by all accounts the Terrorists have won because they have been invited and given the keys to our government…thank you Barack Hussein Obama, who has been to all 57 states in the US, count the Muslim States in the Organization of Islamic Conference, the 57 states, he knows which states he identifies with and they are not ours.
never before have our children been under attack like this. They insist our kids get a good look at the un-natural and get printed books. Then they have teachers that get to excited teaching it and molest our kids. How many arrests are made in New York and California. Private school charter school home school. picture this, the little boy who is pee'ing down on the dept of education. Breitbart is not here to fight this out for us anymore, VOTE.
When leftists believe that a message is unacceptable, they stage protests against the speaker, shout him down, and deny him his right to express himself. When conservatives believe a message is unacceptable, they walk away. Who's the grown up in this world?
I dedicate an article found on Yahoo, Google etc. ("God to Same-Sexers: Hurry Up") to Savage who lives up to his name. He's like a spider hanging by a thread over Hell's open mouth while cursing the God who can cut the thread!

While it disturbs me that someone professing to be against bullying uses bullying tactics to get his point across. Well I suppose that just really goes to show the rest of us exactly the type of person it is that would stoop to something this low. Yes, I am Christian. No, I don't support or legitimize the gay lifestyle. No I don't hate them for being gay but I don't care to be around anyone, gay or straight, that first identifies themselves and their worth as a human being first by their sexuality or sexual preference. I know many who are Christian and straight and I would say exactly the same thing if they first identified themselves as being a straight heterosexual. I also don't hang around people who lust after women, or men, for that matter as I believe that too is not only a sin but wrong in any civilized society where the human value of a person is what that person is, an individual human being, and not a sex object or something to be ridiculed for having a different belief system than mine. I can't speak to non-Christians as they don't believe at all. But I can speak to those of you who profess to be Christians and a follower of Christ. Recall in Matthew 25 where Christ states "So you have done to these, the least of my brethern you have also done unto me." Christ's words set the tone on how we should treat all men. My God is big enough to take care of all of humanities problems and regardless of what men say I choose to follow God. What you choose to follow is your own business despite the fact that I believe you should follow God and do the things that God desires of us rather than cave into the desires and wants of the world. For what should it profit a man to gain the world and yet loose his immortal soul. Hate me for this if you desire, it's really not my problem and my faith in God shall sustain me now and forever. That, despite your rants, ravings and even killing can't be taken away from me and this life is but a temporary state. It's the eternal life with God that I have my heart set on.
We all know our Dear Leader suffered taunts and provocation about his big, floopy "Dumbo-ish" ears. Insensitive peers would put him up on a mock cross and jeer at him wagging their Collective™ tongues shrieking at him with vile impertinence, bitter contempt, and a rabid rage that even Joe Obiden would admire: "If you're the 'messiah', then fly down from that cross with your ears!" Followed by the most crushing, insensitive laughter and guffawing this side of Hell. We know the pain and abuse Dear Leader had to suffer when he was a young statist, and why this matter of BULLYING is a personal enmity he wants to put an end to.
He was bullying Christians. He got the crowd to gang up on them.
It's obviously OK for Gay bully Christians and for the Black Panthers to bully White Americans..
(EDITED) It's obviously OK for Gays to bully Christians and for the Black Panthers to bully White Americans..
I tried posting a comment on YouTube about this, and I was instantly attacked by left-wing protectors of this guy. Things are getting CREEPY out there. Obama has created this environment–he has GOT TO GO!
I will not be careful as to how I respond to the foolishness of the posts of some of these people.
Let us begin with the differences between True Christians and those that are Christian in name only.
True Christians Love all people regardless of what they believe, who they are, how they live their lives and so on. That can be found in Mark 12:29-31 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
True Christians also live by the premise to hate sin. This is because sin, the bad things we do, separate us from God, but not his love for us. Nothing can do that; Romans 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
True Christians know that God (Jesus) gives us the free will choice to live for him, or, not live for him.
True Christians Teach everyone they can the word of God and let them decide what to do with it as it says in Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go yes into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
This is the choice God gives all of us.
True Christians do not turn their back on their neighbor regardless of who it is; Luke 10:25-37, The Parable of The Good Samaritan.
I will put it simple: True Christians are not race haters, Gay bashers, or hate mongers of any kind.
Enough said.
As far as those who are Christian in name only, you already know how they act. I do not need to rehash it here. I won’t bash them, lest I become like them.
I feel sorry for Mr. Savage. He never meet a true Christian before and has had the unpleasant task of dealing with the want to be Christians. I pray that he does in fact meet up with a true Christian. While he may not turn from his sinful ways according to the Bible, which is his free will choice in the matter, the true Christians may possibly earn his respect and that would be something to praise the name of the Lord Jesus over. And yes, I do understand completely where his anger toward Christians comes from, as I have had my dealings with many a want to be Christian myself.
SO let us STOP beating each other up. What is the sense of it? The very people we are beating up may wind up being the ones we will need a helping hand from.
Dan Savage = ignorant, profane bully.
As a journalism student who was actually there for the entire speech, I really need to say that the way this is being portrayed is outrageous.
Yes, parts of this speech were totally inappropriate (Savage joked that it's because he has Tourette's; he doesn't), and we all agreed that he was harsh when discussing Christian beliefs. He made a valid point that could have been presented in a much more tactful way. But in reality, this was absolutely an anti-bullying speech with a positive message. These three minutes of the two-hour speech were the only portion in which he was even remotely hostile toward Christians, and they are the only three minutes being discussed in the news.
Later in the speech, he apologized for his "Bible-bashing", but pointed out that the people who were secure in their faith were the ones who did not run away from such harsh criticism. He expressed appreciation for the "tolerant people of faith" who did not walk out, which got a much greater response across the room. Overall, the responses of audience members- Christian and non-Christian alike- were overwhelmingly positive! Perhaps fifty students- out of the three thousand who attended the seminar- were so crushed as to walk out; others might have been stung, but the speech really was worth staying for.
I'm a gay man and a believer in Jesus Christ. I am in complete agreement with this man. If you can dish it, you can most certainly take it. I've heard my church and many other bash homosexuality while I was at Sunday service. It got to the point where it made me seriously question my strong Catholic beliefs. I am no longer affiliated with any specific religion, but I believe that Jesus loves me for what he created me to be. He made me stronger for having to deal with his followers that don't follow his true word of love and acceptance. I'm sure the matter could have been brought up in a more neutral way, but what's done is done. I love myself and Jesus. No amount of bashing from intolerant Christians can change that.
This is a classic example of yellow journalism. You should be ashamed. Matt Drudge is the king of highlighting yellow journalism on his site.
With the comments he made, now we know why he got beat up so much in school. It wasn't bullying, he got beat up because he said stupid crap. He is suppose to be spreading but he hates Christians and shows no tolerance to those who don't believe the same as him. I find little credibility in his so called movement.
Hate speech from a fag.
THAT Queer got Beat up? Hard to believe a fucking loser asshole like that ever got the shit kicked out of him, SHOCKED! I felt like kicking his ass just watching his pretentious GAY self spouting hate. Hope nobody shoots him….. not.
How about free speech to be honest id be bored if I could not find something that doesn't offend someone I am always telling people be open and free and say what you want about me and my beliefs I love free expression and speech. I certainly am no Christian that is one of the main reasons I left that faith was I wanted to be relaxed not uptight about everything. I am no atheist either but I find them much more fun.
And you may wonder why we are where we are in this country.
I think we need to have compassion for this person. Notice the how the face seems squeezed in, as though someone was checking out a grapefruit at the market. This signifies low IQ, high degrees of animalistic aggression, bordering on rabid. It is best to avoid such a person if you can. If not, at least get some entertainment value by egging him on ot evermore extreme positions to the point where even stupid people in the crowd understand him for the scared little boy that he is.
As quoting a very profound axiom, "If you live like there is no Hell, you had better be right." Even if one doesn't believe in Hell, to bet there isn't one is highly counter-intuitive; not to mention most unwise.
The definition of a bully is someone who attempts to intimidate or demean others while in a position of power and control. Sounds like our buddy Savage should take his own course. Also, don't people call gays "pansies"? Once again, it seems that he's OK with using the very language that he decries in others to attack those who disagree with him.
Nice observation Gary

Awesome to see that 99% of the students stayed to hear the speech. Gradually, we are winning the culture war.

Nice that you acknowledge that our Public Schools are indoctrination center…not educational establishments…the Internet…Freedom of Information…will crush your culture war…people aren't the lemmings they used to be…welcome to the Renaissance…
This guy actually is ignorant of the Bible. The true message of the Bible is in the New Testament. As any educated person knows the Old Testament is basically a history of the faith and the first 5 books are the Jewish Torah. The message of love from Jesus is 100% in the Gospel. ( Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).
It is further obvious that this guy Savage is a very angry and unhappy person.
Keep in mind.. Dan Savage was supposed to be there to speak on journalism to teenagers and instead used the podium to voice his hate-speech instead. If you watch the video, he makes a case for bullying based on an error-filled presentation of bible texts.
His whole context is off, regarding the quotes he criticized from the Old Testament. He's trying to frame it as if the law of that time, prior to the fulfillment of Christ, were still in effect. Which simply is not true. Only those things that are repeated in the New Testament, such as homosexuality, are still in effect. Had he taken the time to understand basic christian doctrine he would have known that.
As for slavery, again, he takes it out of context. Paul said to obey the laws of the land and the authorities. The law of the time (Roman Law.. not biblical law) had specifics regarding slave ownership. The book of Titus is NOT about "how to own a slave" as Dan Savage erroneously stated. It instructs slaves, who are christians, but slaves according to Roman Law.. to be obedient, kind and respectful as a testimony of their faith in God.
As laws changed about slavery, again, christians are told to obey those laws. Thus, when REPUBLICANS voted 100% for the freedom of slaves (Democrats vote only 40% in favor)… once the laws were changed, christians were expected to obey that.
In addition, slavery during Paul's time often came voluntarily in order to pay off a huge debt. Many people volunteered years of their service as a "bond-slave" until their debt was paid.
But this Dan Savage doesn't care about what the Bible says, nor does he understand it. He only selectively takes topics out of context to fit his own, obvious bashing and bullying of christians and tries to justify it with a "how do you like it?" attitude. The only thing he succeeded doing was proving how ignorant he is of what christians believe and how much hatred is in his heart.
What I found sad was that as he was attacking (bullying) the christians and the bible, the the other students in the sudience were cheering and clapping. That's one of the problems with bullying – no one steps in to stop it, they just cheer the bully on.
The Declaration of Independence is an anti-bullying document. As is the First Amendment in the Constitution.
Dan Savage is a truly vile person.
I am not shocked at what Dan said, he is a homosexual who believe's we all should respect his perverted life style, which I do not and never ever will.
I notice not a single one of you knuckle draggers bothered to actually post what Mr Savage (a Catholic his entire life) said that supposedly offended these lily livered 'christian' journalism students; so here it is in its entirety.
The Bible. We'll just talk about the Bible for a second. People often point out that they can't help it — they can't help with the anti-gay bullying, because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans, that being gay is wrong.
We can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people. The same way, the same way we have learned to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bulls**t in the Bible about all sorts of things. The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document. Slave owners waved Bibles over their heads during the Civil War and justified it. The shortest book in the New Testament is a letter from Paul to a Christian slave owner about owning his Christian slave. And Paul doesn't say "Christians don't own people." Paul talks about how Christians own people.
We ignore what the Bible says about slavery, because the Bible got slavery wrong. Tim — uh, Sam Harris, in A Letter To A Christian Nation, points out that the Bible got the easiest moral question that humanity has ever faced wrong. Slavery. What're the odds that the Bible got something as complicated as human sexuality wrong? One hundred percent.
The Bible says that if your daughter's not a virgin on her wedding night — if a woman isn't a virgin on her wedding night, she shall be dragged to her father's doorstep and stoned to death. Callista Gingrich lives. And there is no effort to amend state constitutions to make it legal to stone women to death on their wedding night if they're not virgins. At least not yet. We don't know where the GOP is going these days.
People are dying because people can't clear this one last hurdle. They can't get past this one last thing in the Bible about homosexuality.
Um, one other thing I want to talk about is — [chuckles] — so, you can tell the Bible guys in the hall that they can come back now, because I'm done beating up the Bible. It's funny, as someone who's on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible, how pansy-assed some people react when you push back.
I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings. But. I have a right to defend myself. And to point out the hypocrisy of people who justify anti-gay bigotry by pointing to the Bible, and insisting we must live by the code of Leviticus on this one issue and no other.
Why don't you bother trying to find ONE wrong thing he wrote. One factually wrong thing instead of trying to manufacture outrage. You guys are unbelievable.
This is a Hate Crime, and this Homosexual needs to be arrested, and prosecuted for this attack. It is equally as illegal as bashing gays.

if this unsaved person understood the Bible then he would know why God had to take such drastic measures for His people- the sins mentioned in Leviticus 20 and their punishment were given to israel becoz that is what they lived with and copied from the land of egypt–a land of perverts and whores–God is Holy and these things still are detestable to Him–today we are seeing these same sins come back–ex. polygamy, homosexuality, incest–they never left us as sinful people but now they are not seen as the evil they are.
The Quran also speaks against homosexuality. Perhaps Savage would like to step up and call the Muslims a bunch of pansies… Yeah… I didn't think so…
I detect a lawsuit against the school disrict at the very least.. Pehaps termination of the Principal and Vices… You just don't allow that to go on at school.. The kids should be protected from perverts like this man.
An anti bullying speech by a first rate bully. Who in the world scheduled that guy?
@John (speaker of the house of cards!): Now that you have declared yourself the intellectual "god," maybe we should all come and sit around YOU on Sundays! You are NOT the one who commands the Dawn, so you can suspend the Liberation Theology and give the world a break from your hot air tactics of "I am, therefore, I am" mentality!
"Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone!" They are, as am I, empowered to be on the side of truth rather than betrayal. God smiled as they did a "mass exodus" away from your sermon on the "foothill."
The following, I BELIEVE, are the verses of the beautiful Scripture that permits Judgment your "mi•sog•y•ny." Ironically, your soul is in the hands of those whom you mock! Not to worry, John we know how to handle your type of mockery. For those who feel called to do so, say a prayer for John's soul when you read this, and this way, God is glorified and we will all make reparation for John's sins!
Romans 1:27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

If Dan Savage wants to impress me with his "courage," talk about muslims and Islam precisely the same way you speak about Christians. He won't, because he knows who will perform an involuntary cranial amputation and who will just turn their backs and walk away.
School choice is the cure for bullying. But it defunds Savage's Democrats.
As a former journalist, I am appalled that conference creators would suggest journalism students in a high school setting should sit through a rant against the Bible and their Savior as a way to hone their journalistic skills and learn to hear things they don't agree with in an interview situation. This was not an interview. This was a conference – the difference should be crystal clear. If you are interviewing someone and they say something that offends you, continuing to listen is part of the interview, not an implicit agreement with what the person has said. Sitting through these remarks in a conference setting, however, would be. I am glad that it was clear to the 100 students that had enough faith to walk out. Our Christian bashing has gone waaaayyy too far in this country and our tolerance of it has to stop. It is time for Christians all over this nation to stand up. Thanks to these kids for leading the way.
I won't defend Savage's lack of tact, but I will make one point: If Christians would simply stop telling people how to live their own lives, based on modern translations and interpretations of ancient writings, the source of which is questionable at best, and judging others' sex lives, the "Christian bashing" would stop or greatly lessen. As a Deist, I bash no one and they don't criticize me. I put no words in God's mouth.
Scott Hiddleston It's not the Christians telling you how to life your life, we just offer suggestions then it's up to you. It's the government bent on telling us and forcing us on how to live our lives. Geesh WAKE UP!
Fact is that was a government run school
