As many as 100 high school students walked out of a national journalism conference after an anti-bullying speaker began cursing, attacked the Bible and reportedly called those who refused to listen to his rant “pansy assed.”

The speaker was Dan Savage, founder of the “It Gets Better” project, an anti-bullying campaign that has reached more than 40 million viewers with contributors ranging from President Obama to Hollywood stars. Savage also writes a sex advice column called “Savage Love.”

Savage, and his husband, were also guests at the White House for President Obama’s 2011 LGBT Pride Month reception. He was also invited to a White House anti-bullying conference.

Savage was supposed to be delivering a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. But it turned into an episode of Christian-bashing.

Rick Tuttle, the journalism advisor for Sutter Union High School in California, was among several thousand people in the audience. He said they thought the speech was one thing – but it turned into something else.

“I thought this would be about anti-bullying,” Tuttle told Fox news. “It turned into a pointed attack on Christian beliefs.”

Tuttle said a number of his students were offended by Savage’s remarks – and some decided to leave the auditorium.

“It became hostile,” he said. “It felt hostile as we were sitting in the audience – especially towards Christians who espouse beliefs that he was literally taking on.”

Tuttle said the speech was laced with vulgarities and “sexual innuendo not appropriate for this age group.” At one point, he said Savage told the teenagers about how good his partner looked in a speedo.

The conservative website CitizenLink was the first to report about the controversy. They interviewed a 17-year-old girl who was one of students who walked out of the auditorium.

“The first thing he told the audience was, ‘I hope you’re all using birth control,’” she told CitizenLink. “he said there are people using the Bible as an excuse for gay bullying, because it says in Leviticus and Romans that being gay is wrong. Right after that, he said we can ignore all the (expletive deleted) in the Bible.”

As the teenagers were walking out, Tuttle said that Savage heckled them and called them pansy-assed.

“You can tell the Bible guys in the hall they can come back now because I’m done beating up the Bible,” Savage said as other students hollered and cheered. “It’s funny as someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansy-assed people react when you push back.”

The executive director of the National Scholastic Press Association provided Fox News with joint statement from the Journalism Education Association that was sent to members – after a number of people complained about Savage’s remarks.

“We appreciate the level of thoughtfulness and deliberation regarding Dan Savage’s keynote address,” the NSPA wrote. “some audience members who felt hurt by his words and tone decided to leave in the middle of his speech, and to this, we want to make our point very clear: While as a journalist it’s important to be able to listen to speech that offends you, these students and advisers had simply reached their tolerance level for what they were willing to hear.”

The NSPA said they did not have a prior transcript of Savage’s speech and that wish “he had stayed more on target for the audience of teen journalists.” They also said it provided a “teachable moment” for students.

As for Savage’s attack on people of faith?

“While some of his earlier comments were so strongly worded that they shook some of our audience members, it is never the intent of JEA or NSPA to let students get hurt during their time at our conventions,” they wrote.

However, not once did the NSPA or the JEA offer any apologies to the students or faculty advisors or anyone else in attendance.

Savage did offer a sarcastic apology “if I hurt anyone’s feelings.”

“But I have a right to defend myself and to point out the hypocrisy of people who justify anti-gay bigotry by pointing to the Bible and insisting we must live by the code of Leviticus on this one issue and no other.”

Tuttle said that he “felt duped” by the event. “There were Christian schools who went to the conference. To have this happen was disappointing and shocking.”

The NSPA said they should have done a better job preparing schools for what to expect.

For his part, Tuttle said that he will definitely be more cautious about the speakers at future conventions.Tuttle related how Savage told students that for a number of years he was not allowed in schools. He told the students that because it’s gained national acceptance “he’s reveling in the fact that it’s basically a middle finger to all those teachers and administrators who wouldn’t let him have access to those students before.”

But for some of Tuttle’s students – they felt like the anti-bullying activist was in fact – the bully.

  2. Obama has just been endorsed by the US Communist Party. Weeeelllll go fig?

  3. Liberals are usually intolerant people. It is all too common that people that criticize others are the most guilty of the infractions that they critcize. I never heard of Dan Savage. Judging from the article the name fits.

  4. Interesting that if he had gone off on a tangent in SUPPORT of the Bible there would have been outrage at children in a school setting being exposed to religion but because it was bashing the bible no one see the need to apologize. The double standard is very disappointing.

The truth (and reality) STINGS just a bit! It appears

  7. The last sentence of the article says it all. He was there to talk against bulying, but chose to bully instead. I guess it's alright to bully as long as Christians are on the receiving end.

  8. Billy Collins /

So a guy who takes it in the butt, and performs oral sex on men is calling somebody a pansie!!!lol, but I guess you have to be tough to take anything up the butt.

  9. Come on. Why did he do that? How is him being a bully at an anti bullying conference the right thing to do? It amazes me how people who work for causes alienate half their audience and concerned members with hate speech like this. What a turnoff.

If you want to understand Obama's Belief systems, just take a look at who he surrounds himself with.

  11. Savage is right. Fundamentalist "Christians" have no problem savaging people, but when there's "push back," they turn into a bunch of whiners who don't realize one simple fact: if you want respect, you have to give it. You can't treat people like crap and then become offended when they return the favor. Karma is a bitch!

  12. If Obama had a gay son, the gay son would be a savage bully.

    • Naturally you are not very bright. How was this comment constructive? Helpful? Was it at least cathartic for you? Hateful, sarcastic, and irrational comments, of which this website is full of, evidence a legitimate case for the outlawing of conservative religion

So I decided to read the posts in response to this piece and time and again note the outrage at this supposed anti-bully czar. I agree with many of the comments. I also note that this Savage person is spinning and twisting the Christian tenets of the Bible…we are not to harm another. So his concerns are not with Christian's bullying gay people…to be a Christian you have to actually follow The Law and harming another is clearly against His Word. Mr. Savage's real agenda (as is the case with many gay people) is to disparage the Bible because the gay lifestyle is an abomination. The gay community has been, for several decades now, setting up a platform of watering-down or removing Christian beliefs from society for not patting them on the back for being homosexual. They set a course to force acceptance through shame, which has worked, and now their intent is to remove Christianity from the public square because it has the audacity to call same-sex relations sin. I don't think most people are considering the very real threat this protected class (by who they have sex with really?) understand the danger they pose to free religious expression…well Christianity in any case. If they are able to shut down Christian businesses, hospitals, Churches, shelters, help centers, etc by saying we are somehow expressing hate speech because we don't condone their lifestyle as either healthy or whatever then look for Christians being remanded to their basements in hiding…and anyone that doesn't think that's their intent needs to go to a gay pride parade and listen to what they are saying. Churches all across this country are beginning to face the gay wrath if the Church refuses to marry them (in states where it is legal of course) and then the Church is not upholding law and loses its 501c3 status…and by the by, I thought these loons on the left were all about separation of Church and state, so what's with the interference in what these Churches do anyway? Well whatever, most people who say they are Christian have allowed themselves to be so wracked with guilt or shame that they are supporting abortion and all kinds of stuff the Bible expressly says is wrong just so they don't look 'mean'. (Seriously though, tolerance does not mean you give over your soul to another, sheesh) I don't know how reasonable it is to get mad about this guy when it is Christians themselves who have been allowing the drive to spit in the face of God. No, never harm another person out of slight…the Bible is VERY clear on that…but my gosh stand up for something as important as your right to practice your faith freely…as it is written. I don't have all the answers on how to do that, that's for sure…but I would think living your life full of the Holy Spirit and in-your-face joyfully as possible would be good. Wear God on your sleeve and vote out anyone who gives the government the power to suppress the rights of Christians.

As a Christian who invests my life as an anti-bullying speaker in schools across North America, I am saddened that Mr. Savage chose to use that wonderful opportunity as his 'BULLY' pulpit. He has had, and taken, numerous opportunities to voice his opinions in the national media…forums for which his strong opinions were more suited. He has been seen and heard by MILLIONS! His rant was quite simply, unnecessary and ill-advised. As I understand it, his purpose at the conference was to deliver an anti-bullying message. If he was the opening keynote speaker, his speech was supposed to set the tone for the event. If he was called upon to close the event, he should have provided the 'finishing touch.'Yet, he chose to eliberately offend a significant number of the attendees, and to include language that is inappropriate for that audience demographic. In the brief clip above, he seems angry…vindictive. Based upon his belief system, I can understand how he feels, but I am extremely disappointed that he would show such disrespect to the event organizers in the manner that he has. There are two egregious acts which professional speakers must avoid at all costs: not respecting the boundaries of the time allotted for their speech, and NOT addressing the topic for which they have been engaged.Again, by all accounts, his speech should have addressed bullying, but as he freely admits, he was "beating up the Bible." Indeed, his statement, “You can tell the Bible guys in the hall they can come back now because I’m done beating up the Bible,” reeks of sarcasm and mockery. As if he REALLY expected them to return! He even appeared to have notes at the podium, which suggests that his words were scripted and his actions premeditated. He chose the wrong forum, and the wrong audience, and I suspect that in the eyes of many, Mr. Savage has forfeited what little respect they may have had for him.I would offer him my prayers, but I suspect that they would not be appreciated or accepted. Pity.

    • Hateful Christians brought this on themselves. Need I quote from the mythological 'scriptures' of the faith that can be used as [concrete] substantiation against 'anything the church doesn't like'. …. SMH

    • Anthony Batiste, Really???No, labeling some one as "hateful" is hateful in itself, don't you feel like a hypocrite now? It is not out of hate that we tell you these things but we must be true to the word of God and to God who we love to tell the ones he died for about his love and about his death for their sin. Though the actions of the gay lifestyle are sins, the biggest sin is not accepting his sacrifice for your sins. With this sacrifice, all sin becomes irrelevant as long as you accept him and turn from your sins and follow him. This means that even the gay lifestyle must be stopped and then can be forgiven and follow him.

    • Kelly Jackson You really need to take Philosophy of Religion classes. Particularly the "problem of evil" in western philosophies. You'd then understand why Monotheistic Christianity of the fundamentalist variety is completely implausible and fully untenable.

    • Anthony Batiste Dude, you need a serious reality check, I've taken plenty of philosophy, mythology and religion classes and used to be an atheist so grow up and go back to school and reeducate yourself. Really???Your abstract view of monotheistic religion is typical in itself. Would you know a fundamentalist variety of monotheistic religion if it bit you where you sit??? Sounds like your using words that you haven't quite found the meaning to yet, be careful..Yes, blah, blah, blah, No actually it is plausible and is tenable. You can say that but cannot give a reason why…You see the problem is that it is a point of view with entirely no merit. You can't amaze me with your apparent glimpse into the education system by spouting a few well thought of yet poorly articulated statements. All Christianity is monotheistic….meaning one God but so is Judaism and Islam. So what is your actual point, is there one???I've been to college, you??? I call your philosophy of religion classes, mythology, philosophy, and raise you a masters degree…

    • Kelly Jackson Master of what? Let's play…

    • Anthony Batiste You lost me on your first attempt to impress, but failed miserably…Really, …why would I???A person who has it doesn't need to prove it…

Anthony Batiste I fear that you have completely missed my point. That event was not the appropriate forum for that particular expression of Mr. Savages views. Sadly, as is often the case when individuals add comments to news stories, YouTube videos, etc., thoughtful, respectful discussion is replaced by personal attacks, and sometimes vitriolic expressions. You wrote, "Hateful Christians brought this on themselves." Are you therefore saying that a 17-year-old journalism student who attends a conference DESERVED to hear the language, the sarcasm and what was tantamount to 'hate speech' from Mr. Savage? Did they sign up for that? I think not. Mr. Savage knew EXACTLY what he was doing and he should have known better. Think about it. He is an ADULT, with a WIDE sphere of influence, yet he chose to pour out his wrath on TEENAGERS. He deceived the conference organizers, and he blind-sided kids. Not very classy.

    • Kelly Jackson Your comment presupposes my purpose is to 'impress' you. I'm merely practicing my American right to dissent – and boy oh boy I surely dissent. We will disagree on this one dude. Be well.

    • Mark L Brown There is merit in your position. Could Savage have been more "unsavegely" (lol)? yes. However, they knew full well what kind of voice Savage was. These kids are journalism majors and I would venture so far as to say they don't need coddling; They hear worse from other kids on campus.

The Christians that walked about also expressed their right of dissent. I honor that. The remaining students loved the 'openness' of the talk Savage gave, as evidenced by rambunctious applause. Thanks for your thoughts.

  15. A very good example of HATE SPEECH from the LGBT activists.

  16. Amazing how a bunch of moron right-wingers, who always complain about political correctness stifling free speech, get bent out of shape about someone exercising their right to free speech.

I've never seen a bigger bunch of sniveling crybaby losers in my life than the modern GOP. You morons like to think of yourself as such manly tough guys, but someone criticizes the Bible or your backwards views and you start wailing like a little girl with a skinned knee.

  17. Sandra Delduca /

He's an anti-bullying speaker, and there he goes bullying Christians!

  18. Nama Ste /

Once again, the hypocrisy of liberals rears its ugly head. Am I surprised that Mr. Savage is one who preaches so-called "tolerance?" NOT AT ALL. "Tolerance" to a liberal only applies to HIS OWN beliefs–it does not extend to those of others. They are the ones who are truly intolerant and condescending to those who espouse different views from their own, and it has been my personal observation that liberals are the first to resort to irrational histrionics and ugly name-calling the vast majority of the time. I for one am sick of their poor behavior, and Mr. Savage's angry slurs against Christians are but one classic example.

  19. What does Bible have to do with Christians who bully? Most(except few good ones) of the Christians are retarded and don't know their religion… Paul clearly says: "why judge others, when you don't even judge yourselves?"(1 Cor ch. 5) Christians should mind their own business and own congregation. Why do they care what non-Christians do? They are themselves "drowning" in sins… I think this man should have cursed Christians at first and not Bible…

    • And bullying is never right. It doesn't matter if victim is gay or the any ordinary person. So law needs to protect ordinary people from bulling too, not just gays and blacks.

    • And bullying is never right. It doesn't matter if victim is gay or the any ordinary person. So law needs to protect ordinary people from bulling too, not just gays and blacks. P.S. Don't be hostile for the word "ordinary" here, I am not white supremacist. It's just a word.

    • Nama Ste /

I agree that bullying is always wrong, but you mistake not condoning something for hate and bullying. If I truly believe it is dangerous for my daughter to play in the street, is it more loving to say nothing or to do everything in my power to ensure she is safe? Christians believe the gay lifestyle is harmful to the individual and to society, and they cannot in good conscience say otherwise. Before you get angry with my statement, realize that they are entitled to their beliefs (and to receiving tolerance) just as you are entitled to your own.

    • Nama Ste Well, if Christian's son becomes gay, he/she can disown him or tell him that he won't be accepted at home until he changes. What else? If it's harmful for your daughter to stay in the street, you just not let her go. But you can't prohibit other people from going in the street. And you shouldn't mock them too.

    • Nama Ste And I don't know what reason would I have had to get angry with your statement. It was a peaceful and easy question.

    • Nama Ste /

Lasha Bezhanishvili I agree about not mocking. I would love my child regardless.I would not disown him. But I would love him exactly the same as I did before.

    • Nama Ste /

Lasha Bezhanishvili I appreciate your response. As a Christian, I am used to having people mock and bash my beliefs, as well–even though I am quite educated and arrived at my convictions after years of thought, study, and consideration. I believe it is best to have love and peace toward one's fellow man in one's heart; however, this does not mean I must recuse myself from the public arena and have no voice on what I believe to be in the best interest of other human beings. Jesus himself addressed the issues of the day, and He did not shy away from tough subjects. That was actually what made people so angry with Him that they wanted Him dead. I do believe it is possible to love people deeply and without abandon while strongly disagreeing with them. That is the very nature of unconditional love as Christ taught and commanded, and it is this love that is at the heart of my beliefs as a Christian. We are commanded to love God above all else and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, so clearly not all who call themselves Christians practice the teachings of Christ.

    • Nama Ste Thank you for a warm response. Jesus never asked anyone to start protesting about Roman liberal views about homosexuality. And historians know that it was OK in Rome to have sexual slaves. Paul said it was bad to be homosexual as it was bad to be non-Christian. Thus, I don't see any reason in protesting gay marriage laws for example. John said in his epistle: "we know we are from God and whole world is in wickedness and sin." I may be agnostic but I am future Historian and also spend lot of time studying theology and church history. I know Christianity very well and I am fundamentalist/conservative. And in this matter – Christians should mind their own business and judge sinners in their own congregation. I am pro-sinlessness(after baptism), which is the reason I don't consider most Christians real Christians.

  20. A man who doesn't read and study the Bible is the last person to talk about it. Savage has always been hateful, and now this hater, who has taken up the mantle of anti-bullying, shows his hypocrisy.

I disagree with all of you, and the level of ignorance and bigotry you all possess is disgusting. This article paints a completely different picture than what actually happened, as shown by the attached video. Did any of you even watch it? This article portrays his thesis on homosexuality and its relation to current events and the Bible as an offensive tirade coupled with vulgar attacks on believers and the Bible, when in reality his thesis was delivered in a calm, clear, intellectual manner. In reality, he had a range of excellent points, and the author of that article shot himself in the foot by posting the truth of what happened which contrasted and ultimately disproved the distortion of the facts he presented. The fact of the matter is that political party affiliation and political-philosophical beliefs have absolutely NOTHING to do with tolerance, sympathy, empathy, or support of the homosexual community. It has to do with the condition of your heart – the ability to understand and accept the good in other people, REGARDLESS of their sexual orientation. You all are a perfect example of the hatred and bullying based on unjustifiable and hypocritical Biblical arguments that Mr. Savage was discussing. And guess what? You are now the minority. Almost 60% of this nation supports the homosexual community and their political movement for equality. I'm proud to say I'm one of them, because unlike you, I'm not filled with hate and disdain. You claim to be close with the Lord God and Jesus Christ and to know them, but share none of their Love and Compassion. When He judges you, just know you won't be saved. "For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (Matthew 7:13,14).

  24. paul said for a slave to remain a slave and a free man to remain a free man, why?

because you are born again, born out of this world, this world means nothing from that moment on. The Christian lives for the next life, not for this one!

  25. The bullies deserve at least 10 year imprisonment. Doesn't matter for what they bullied a person- religion, sexual orientation, height, weight, skin color or anything else.

  26. Aren't we yet sick and tired of these freaks yet? I swear to god I'm at the point that if I ever hear anyone talking like that, I'll punch him right in the co#ksu*k#r.

  29. Wait: Christians are upset that an opposing viewpoint (pro-gay existence) laments their mythological premise for existence? Oh no! Who would have thought a segment of the American population would actually hold real-as-life human beings in a higher regard than mythological constructs like Satan, Hell, and a God who doesn't want to physically manifest on the earth, preferring instead to only be reached through the mental concentration of blind faith. Wow, and they lament the LEFT as psychotic and irrational. #laughable

Lets go back to basics for a moment and use your own (science argument) for a logical answer. What is sex designed for? You can stick your weener up Barney Franks ass all you want, you'll never reproduce, thank God. Go hang yourself some place. Oh ya, and thanks for the Aids, we couldn't have done that without you.

  32. I wonder why this "Pansy Ass" didn't level the same venom against Muslims or the Koran? Seems like it takes a bully to know a bully, and since Christians don't go around beheading folks who speak out against them, he felt safe bullying them. What a collosal C.S.

  33. SO THIS GUY AND OTHERS BASH AND BULLY OTHERS FOR BULLYING OTHERS. TYPICAL LIBS THAT AIN'T.
    WHAT A CROCK!

  34. To me it seems Dan Savage missed an opportunity to present himself to a diverse group of young people and win them to his point of view. As an adult, speaking to those much younger, he was just being a bully. Shame on you Dan Savage!

  35. Dan should have watched the South Park episode a couple of weeks ago.

  36. There he is–the bully-in-chief himself–he who puts his boot on the neck of productive enterprise while he looks around for "who's a$$ to kick next". I'm surprised he could keep a straight face while reading that spiel off his teleprompter. Haven't we had enough of this leftist moralizing over leftist constituent groups? Obama says to HIS people: "Be what you are and the government will make you happy–no matter who or what else must be torn down to do it." It is an abominable power play and it has to be stopped.

  39. Darryl Willis /

It seems strange to me that someone speaking at an anti-bullying conference would resort to bashing someone who disagreed with him. I would go as far as to suggest that Mr. Savage proved himself to be a hypocrite on the subject. To berate and belittle is in essence bullying. I will force you to accept my views by bashing you and insulting you. How does this promote anti-bullying? Abilene Christian University a few years ago welcomed a homosexual/lesbian group that was promoting tolerance to their campus. Although they disagreed with their lifestyles, the college faculty and body engaged with them, hosted group discussions and treated them with respect. The group was impressed. This is an example of Bible believing Christians who demonstrate graciousness and kindness to those with whom they disagree. Would that Savage could learn from that example.

  42. Um, no…he just quoted the bible. What's wrong with that?

  43. What comes first, anti-American traitor, anti-Christian bigot, anti-free enterprise communist, irrational vindictive loser OR flaming homosexuality? These pathetic, low-life traits exist in every single gay mob Democrat.

  44. Douglas Lang /

Another example of "the only way for you to be tolerant and a non-bully as to do exactly as I say…" You can believe homosexuality is wrong and not be a bully and he clearly misses the point on purpose.

  45. Winder what he has against "pansies?"

  46. Mr. Savage has completely lost any credibility. Is his first concern really about stopping bullying? It sure doesn't look that way. Here's a man who is blatantly using an anti-bullying message as a Trojan horse for smuggling in an anti-Bible, anti-Christian, and gay rights agenda. If your school or organization is considering hiring Mr. Savage, or anyone else from his organization, as a speaker, just say no. Bullying anyone is wrong; there's no need to single out a single group that shouldn't be bullied. Stop the bullying and the political correctness.

  47. not only savage, but also ignorant!

  48. not only savage, but also ignorant!

  49. Douglas Lang /

I believe homosexuality is wrong. However, I also believe in being friends with all people, living by example, and not preaching to people who do not wish to hear it. I will only give my opinion if I am asked or to an audience willing to listen… But I will never EVER accept homosexuality as an okay thing to do just so I am not called a bully. The only bully tactic here is "DO AS I SAY OR ELSE I WILL LABEL YOU A BULLY!"

  50. It's never been about the bullying, but who is getting bullied.

    • Wow. Faux News bends it like Bekham again. Saw the actual article on a fat friends post. Will try to repost. On an I phone and over the age of 18. Not the most tech savvy. The guy DID curse. But to have the stones to say he bible bashed? Truly shows how Fox is not a news agency but a propaganda machine.
