Air Force Academy Backs Away from Christmas Charity

Air Force Academy Backs Away from Christmas Charity

Nov 4, 2011

The Air Force Academy apologized Thursday night after it was accused of religious intolerance for promoting Operation Christmas Child – a program designed to send holiday gifts to impoverished children around the world.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation said military commanders crossed the line when they promoted the gift program, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, an organization run by Franklin Graham.

Operation Christmas Child said they expect to send more than 8 million shoe box gifts to underprivileged children in 100 countries. Around 60,000 churches and 60,000 community groups in the United States are participating.

MikeyWeinstein, of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said an evangelical Christian message is also included in the boxes.

“This is a proselytizing entity of Franklin Graham,” said the group’s president, Mikey Weinstein. He filed a complaint on behalf of 132 Academy personnel including two sets of Muslim-American parents.

Brig. Gen. Richard Clark, the Commandant of Cadets, released a statement Friday explaining why the Air Force Academy retracted the e-mail promoting the Christian ministry.

Under orders from Air Force headquarters, Clark said only the Chaplain Corps is responsible for advertising faith-based programs.

“The cadets had nothing but good intentions, but this was something that should have started with the Chaplains, not the Cadet Wing,” Clark said. “That doesn’t mean the cadets can’t volunteer for the Christmas toy drive, they can participate through the Cadet Chaplain Corps.”

The attack on Operation Christmas Child has generated outrage across the country.

“It’s another anti-faith effort that we are seeing by this administration,” said Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA), who just pushed a congressional effort to reaffirm “In God We Trust” as the national motto.

“This is beyond political correctness,” Forbes told Fox News. “This is an anti-faith mode that we see over and over again coming from this administration and the people serving in it.”

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, told Fox News that this is evidence that the Obama administration “has engaged in a culture war beyond measure.”

“We see here the collateral damage – the fallout of religious freedom and the attack on Christian organizations that are simply reaching out to help those in need,” Perkins said. “This is a long pattern under this administration under a president who apologized for everything that is American.”

“It’s so outrageous,” said Jordan Sekulow an attorney with the American Center for Law and Justice. He said the controversy is an example of the cultural shift happening in the United States.

“This is a perfect example of how heartless these groups are when it comes to defending their anti-religion position,” Sekulow said. “It’s not about the First Amendment. It’s about a real hatred of religious people and people of faith that they would go so far as to stop an assistance program like Operation Christmas Child.”

Weinstein refuted that allegation.

“We are not trying to take shoe boxes of toys and candy away from kids,” Weinstein told Fox News. “But this is clearly an egregious Constitutional mistake.”

The Academy sent an e-mail to the entire cadet wing inviting them to participate in the Operation Christmas Child project.

“As the holidays approach, we have the opportunity to provide the joy of Christmas to impoverished Children around the world,” read the e-mail sent to some 4,400 cadets and provided to Fox News. “PLEASE, PLEASE CONSIDER SPENDING SOME OF YOUR VALUABLE TIME AND MONEY TO LOVE ON A KID AROUND THE WORLD!!.”

Weinstein said he was alerted to the program on Wednesday after he was notified by an upset cadet.

“The cadet sent an e-mail saying, ‘This just shows how our military is supporting one religion – which is Christianity,’” Weinstein said.

He later received a telephone call from Brig. Gen. Clark.

“He said it was a mistake and he would fix it,” Weinstein said. “Lady Liberty is smiling tonight. This is a victory for the Constitution.”

“We agree that it was inappropriate,” Academy spokesman Lt. Col. John Bryan told the Colorado Gazette. He told the newspaper that the initial e-mail was sent by cadets without the knowledge of senior leaders.

Late yesterday, cadets received the following e-mail retracting the promotion of Operation Christmas Child:

“My apologies for the below message as it was not sent to the proper audience. The Cadet Chaplain Corps will be resending through the proper channels and to the proper audience.

Weinstein said he doesn’t have a problem with secular toy drives – but Graham’s, he said, crossed the line.

“Franklin Graham is a fundamentalist – a total enemy of the Constitution – an absolutely incredible Islamophobe,” Weinstein said.

He argued that Operation Christmas Child should have been promoted through the Academy’s chaplains – not the entire Academy. And that’s exactly where the project rests – in the hands of the chaplains.

“The kids will still get their toys,” he said acknowledging that it will only be promoted to a smaller subset of people.

General Clark said thousands of cadets routinely volunteer for various projects.

“Our cadets are outstanding young men and women who consistently give up their time, to include parts of their spring and summer breaks, to help people in need across the country,” he said. “The character of our cadets is second to none.”

Operation Christmas Child said they were unaware of the controversy at the Air Force Academy.

  1. This is just plain wrong…What is the US coming to. I was apauled….I'm sorry our military has to serve such a muslim regiem…We will vote him out this year and christianity back in the U.S.A.

  2. The day we stop caring for the ones in need regardless of their religion, is the day we all start losing our freedom we become prejudice, oh we can't help this child that is dieing as his parents are this, more battles are won by helping than with bullets. I lived in a community where all the religions worked together and it was great, the number of children helped in a small community was unreal, and I am tired of prejudice, against diseases, against people who have the strength to do, it is not about religion it is about people needing help. Everyone can throw stones as much as they like but could they live in a glass house where all could see there actions, I am sorry few can and that includes myself, so let the world forget about who is this and that and oh we can not help as we will be making the enemy strong, you are making friends that will last a lifetime and those friends help when they can as you helped when they needed it most.

    • Samaritan's Purse gives those gifts to children around the world regardless of their religion – and Obama's people stopped the Air Force from promoting the Operation Christmas Child simply because it's a Christian group doing the giving. But no worries, my son's school, and countless other churches, will fill the void as long as we can before the government shuts down Christians. Evidently the Jews and the Christians can be treated as lesser people but the rest of the religions cannot.

  3. “Franklin Graham is a fundamentalist – a total enemy of the Constitution – an absolutely incredible Islamophobe,” Weinstein said.

This comment sickens me. Talk about intolerant and an enemy of the Constitution! Look in the mirror, Mikey Weinstein. Shame on you.

    • Franklin is a good man doing good work in God's name.

This type of thing just grieves me to the soul… this is one of the many many reasons that this Friday 11-11-11 there is a day of Prayer and Fasting…. based on 2Chronicles 7:14…. while pagans are joining in rituals for other things… we are Calling in earnest upon THE FATHERS promise to heal our country…. join us?

  4. When Thomas Jefferson separated the church and state, he wasn't proposing an abstract concept. The fact of the matter is that the Monarch of England, currently Queen Elizabeth, is also the spiritual leader of the Church of England; and at the time, the Revolutionary War was against King George III. Thus, when the war ended, such bishops and priests were sent back to Canada or England.

  5. What is the matter with these people, thier the ones violating our rights as christians , have they never read the constitution , we are provided freedom of religon not [freedom from religion, as the activest say as they try, to rewrite our laws. where is the smart christians lawyers, That has backbone enough to take them to court and prove they are wrong!] why is this allowed In our COUNTRY? BORDERING ON TREASON I believe! Why are they allow to stay in this country they HATE so much. America, love or LEAVE IT!

  6. If you keep the spiritual part of your life in order, everything else will fall into place. No matter what "brand" of spiritual life you have, this is true. Whining about someone else being different from the way you see things is a waste of the human spirit.

We are all in need of God. We are all in need of a Saviour. We are all in need of forgiveness for the sins we commit against each other. We all have an enemy – his name is fallen angel – he seeks to use us one against another to destroy all people whom God created to love and obey Him above all else. Let's keep doing what God says is right – see His handiwork shine above all. Holy Spirit thank You for strengthening Your Army against the enemy of Your people.

  8. Mary Lou Hicks /

You are absolutely right, Laura. Who is doing all the caring around the world? Christian groups. Also, do not 80% of our citizens still say they are Christian? why must we always bow to the atheistic or other minority? New nationial leadership will help.

  9. Dirk S Vandeman /

Not so sure that I agree with the congressmen (R-VA) who says this is 'another anti-faith effort that we are seeing by this administration' Sounds a little far-fetched. It may be possible that the administration wants to avoid further dividing Moslem and Christianity to show that we aren't at war with the entire Arab world. Is this really 'culture war beyond measure'? The kids are still going to get their toys. Although, Weinstein sounds like a nut, I think this story is a little blown outta proportion.

  10. Obama is in an all out war against evangelical Christians and Catholics in the military, and in our country in general. One of his first pronouncements as president was that "We are not a Christian nation". He covers the cross whenever he speaks at even a nominally Christian institution like Notre Dame or Georgetown, he is forcing military chaplains to perform same sex marriages against their religious beliefs, he is rooting out all Christian influence in ethics courses in the Air Force and other military academies, and now this among many other anti-Christian actions. He would also rather see orphan children not be placed in a loving family if the Christian adoption agency will not perform adoptions into same sex couples homes. This man is without a doubt anti-Christian as evidenced by both his words and actions. If America fails to remove him from office in the next presidential elections then it is finished as a nation, it's that simple. It is sad that many so-called Christians in the mainline Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Evangelical Lutheran, and Methodist churches in America today place their faith in this man and support his anti-Christian agenda for our land. By their deeds you shall know them, and him.

  11. Laura LoFaso /

Jesus said in Luke 21:17, you will be hated by all on account of My name. So this nonsense is no surprise. The chaplains will send out the email again to the appropriate audience. My prayer is that the cadets who receive it will step up and do even more for Operation Christmas Child in light of all that has gone on.

  12. Danielle Sanders /

This is so sad to me. Can't we look past religion and look into the eyes of a child in need and put aside our petty ways? No matter what you believe, you can help someone who needs it. People need to come together for the greater good, not be divided by their beliefs.

  13. Americans' freedoms are challenged again! As our freedom is stiffled each and everyday by power hungry American BIGOTS like Mikey Weinstein whose sole purpose it is to kill freedom in America, we as individuals are herded into mediocrity. If I am a Cadet and I want to give to Samaritans Purse' Operation Christmas Child, then why should a Freedom Hater like Weinstein be bullying our Cadets with his anti-religious rants? Say Goodbye to American and everything she stands for! Bye!

  14. Eric Eliahu Mann /

What a wonderful victory for the American public. One less proselytizing event in our military means greater religious freedom for everyone. There is nothing wrong with what they are doing, they just can't do it in the name of Christianity and still maintain the separation of Church and State that helps keep everyone more free. The chaplains are taking care of it, as well they should, and I want to know how I can send a donation to this.

  15. So much for our military. I knew eventually our military would go anti-Christian! God bless the militia.

  16. Wow…ridiculous! This is simply yet another blatant attack against Christianity masked behind thinly veiled mendacious allegations of purported religious intolerance. This is clearly not a situation in which anyone's right to exercise their religious beliefs was prevented or hindered, nor was the Air Force itself showing partiality to Christianity OVER ANY other religion. Verily, when the initial e-mail was sent out, religion itself was never even mentioned. The e-mail asked the cadets to donate valuable time and/or money for TOYS to be given to IMPOVERISHED CHILDREN around the WORLD…as an ACT OF LOVE! It's not like the cadets were asked to dress up and re-create a theatrical demonstration of the birth of Christ or the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact, the donation of time and/or money for the children wasn't even a *mandatory* order, so again, it is not as if anyone was being forced into doing something that went against their religious beliefs. Weinstein claims that he doesn't have a problem with secular toy drives, but with the type of comments he made and the fact that there was so much turmoil over a charity drive for kids in the first place, I have to believe that if it had not been the fact that the charity was Christian-affiliated, then it would have been something else; a secular toy drive delivering packages to children on December 25th maybe? Too much like a well known CHRISTIAN holiday! Upon my word, these anti-religious/anti-Jesus types must really *search* for any and every little loophole that they can exploit to the point of lunacy. Seriously, what kind of a person do you have to be to speak out against a charity that is only seeking to bring joy and love to underprivileged children, only for the point and purpose of spreading your own invidious propaganda? >.< I think maybe this year I'll ask SANTA to bring Mikey Weinstein (and the other people involved with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation) a BIBLE for CHRISTMAS! :D

  17. PLEASE! The United States of America was founded on Christian principles and people have come to this country to promote and live in complete religious freedom. When I travel to a country like India, I don't expect the people there to eat beef or worship one God; they believe that cows are sacred and the worship many gods. It is time that we in the USA stop concerning themselves with offending others and be who she is, a CHRISTIAN nation that welcomes people of all races and faiths. Sending biblical messages with toys is not forcing any belief system on to another individual. It is a matter of sharing and if the receipient wants to embrace that message as their own, they have a choice to do so. May God help us to not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  18. Hey weinstein, if you don't like what we are doing here in America, Home of the Brave, please take my advice and move to another country where your wishes are more to your liking. We don't need your kind of trash here! This country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and that is what the majority of Ameicans by far want to live by. We'd be happy to buy you a ticket to the country of your chosing and while you're at it, take the ACLU with you! Good ridence for bad rubbish!

  19. Franklin Graham reaches out to all, I have given shoeboxes for the childred, with no thought of race or location of where these kids live. All I know is that it can be the only gift they receive all year. This congressmam has no heart.

  20. Jon Haldeman /

Radical Leftist Political Correctness is killing this country. We don't need a swine flu vaccine. We need a political correctness vaccine. What a bunch of BS.

  21. Yeah delete my comments, JEWS!

  22. I have had a huge curiosity for quite a while. Why is it that the leaders of the ACLU and other antiChristian organizations that are trying to pull down our liberties have Jewish last names. How can Mr. Weinstein be so oblivious to the two-sided face of Islam. I can't believe that he is so blind to the radical side of Islam that would destroy every man, woman and child of Jewish roots because of such diabolical hatred for their Jewish half brothers…. not to mention those of the Christian faith. We that are civilized DO realize that there are those who may not have the same feelings as their radical counterparts, but their are certainly enough of them that have been swayed by the radicals message of lies and savage hatred that have changed the way our part of the world now operates since 9/11. Every American living in this country has been violently affected by these vile, hatred consumed minions steeped in radical islam. Try denying that Mr. Weinstein. Maybe the answer to my curiosity is that Mr. Weinstein isn't Jewish after all or he is one of those who are in the ranks with Judas.

  23. Pete Siegel /

What's really sad about this situation is Michael Louis Weinstein graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1977. The shoe boxes are handed out regardless of religious preference.

  24. Ivan D. Ursery II /

    I agree with Laura Martin.

  25. Joy Griffith /

Absolutely absurd! This IS a wonderful way to bring a smile to children who have absolutely nothing! We have participated many times. Also a great learning tool for our own children. Who are the ones being intolerant here? For the love of humankind and especially children! GET OVER YOURSELVES!

  26. When the Military become infected with political correctness and anti-God sentiments, we are in deep trouble. America is being intentionally destroyed by a minority of people led by lucifer himself. They are either dupes or active agents.

    • I don't get this. First, the email didn't require them to participate, it was just an invitation. You don't have to believe in Christ to send a toy to a child in need. I think that sending a toy to a child is a good thing. Is everything so political and jaded that we can't all concede that sending toys is good. Come on, my three year old can guide you on this one. Giving toys = good. Calling names = bad.

      Come on people!

But that's not what makes you look like idiots. What makes you look like an idiot is when you try to bring in the first amendment. Have you ever read the actual text? I suspect no, so let's read through it together here.

“ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances".

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."
So first of all, this is about what CONGRESS will or will not do. It is about the government setting up a national religion.

      "…prohibiting the free exercise thereof;".
So the government shall make no law that interferes with my ability to express my religion. Sending an email to invite you to participate in sending toys to needy children does not establish a government religion. It could be con strewed as me exercising my religion but that right is protected by the first amendment.

Te first amendment protects you right to be free to practice your religion, not a right to be free from religions. So, the cadets who sent that email out did nothing wrong. They were practicing their religion which they are free to do so. You, of course, have every right to decline their invitation – BUT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE EMAIL!

I wish people would read the constitution before attacking it or using it to attack others. Have a 5th grade social studies student explain to you that there is no constitutionally protected right from any religion.

  27. Listen People to what every one is saying. This is helping people all over not picking certain people, (asking what religen are are you) You need to get involved and call, write, what ever you can do. You need to help these kids any way you can that are helping others like we ( US) do WE the People! Look me up and help me to let those people that we Are going to help them, as we can, we don't Care what you are.

  28. Listen People to what every one is saying. This is helping people all over not picking certain people, (asking what religen are are you) You need to get involved and call, write, what ever you can do. 29. Weinstein's comments about Franklin Graham are so totally ignorant. The part that he is "an absolutely incredible Islamaphobe" is so far from the truth. While he doesn't believe the same way they do, his organization, Samaritan's Purse, ministers to the physical needs of people of ALL faiths around the world after natural disasters, wars, and famine. They do it in the Name of Jesus, but no one they help is forced or coerced to convert to Christianity!

  30. Cindy Busse /

I just heard about this today and I'm so aggrivated! WHY in the world did the military bow down to this.
whining Mike Wienstein and appologize! Are we not still AMERICA? This is OUR country! WE have allowed all religions to come and enjoy the freedom our country offers. But that wasn't enough. Now they want Christianity to be silenced, and taken completely out of everything OR they will be outraged! They will sue! and our military appologizes? REALLY? They werent preaching to anyone, they weren't demanding changing religions, etc. they were simply asking for people to donate things for children at christmas time. WHY is our military caving in to this man's demands? Come on………if you start appologizing for things like this, it's only going to open the door for others to find things to be 'offended' by. Wonder what type of response this man would have recieved 20-30 years ago? Sad.

  31. The Muslims are not stepping up to help the needy because they are busy creating riots in our cities across the country. They are all over the news. I guess this is what Weinstein supports over Operation Christmas Child.

  32. Read the history of Mikey Weinstein and family. All educated on the taxpayers dime. Evidently, they and a FEW less than courageous members of our armed services who cannot speak for themselves when faced with a challenge to their beliefs , have joined together to form a coalition to make the Weinstein family wealthy. Surely if next year the tide turns against Muslims , Mikey and family will jump on that cause and Christians will once again be safe from these sad, pathetic people. It seems Mikey once wanted to be a pilot, ummmm not enough opportunities to make a buck and use weak people to prosper. So the Air Force paid for him to be a lawyer, more of our tax dollars wasted and used against us. A bit like sending nukes to the middle east.

  33. This is so sad. I find it hard to believe that a simple email would be taken to this extreme. I know that when I get an email I'm not interested in, I just delete it, regardless of the content. I am all for Samaritan's Purse and I fully support it. I hope that those who saw the email participate and ignore this person who obviously needs to be shown the love of Jesus because he seems to have a lot of hatred in his heart.

  34. Amy Kenfield /

Its time to make a stand to show just how many of us believe in operation Christmas child by doing more boxes and reaching more people! Maybe we also need to give a shoe box to some of the opposition to show them Christs love as well! I command ministering angels to every person who apposes operation chistmas child in JESUS's NAME AMEN.

When did our country became a country of pansies? First Michelle Obama says, "this is the first time in my life that I am proud to be an American…" What you werent before? Then get the hell out! Then because of some whack job President we now have the National Day of Prayer taken away….Oh, but his Muslim buddies get to pray in their stupid mosque next to our Twin Towers Memorial…SCREW YOU ALL btw…we have our ever famous words of "In God We Trust" being taken out, so help me God is now out of the courtrooms, Ten Commandments are removed as well….but we still have Godly pictures and artwork decorating our capital buildings and community buildings….just a matter of time before they get a face life though…prayer is taken out schools and every other activity out there….EXCEPT Nascar….GO NASCAR! I am sure there are many others I have forgotten. Point is its time for the people of America to make a stand for our Constitutional rights instead of allowing the government to twist it around and make it what THEY want it to be to fit into their little plan of everything.

Where is the fight at people? Its not in a blog that's for sure….these stupid people want to get their panties in a knot over making a Christmas for kids then we need to make a HUGE NOISE for them being stupid! Shame on all of you! Shame on OUR Airforce for being a bunch of pansies and not making a stand for the very country you protect and serve! Shame on the people that started this BS and the "muslim parents…" OOoooooo go back to Iran or Iraq or Afghanistan or wherever the hell you came from. If you love your religion so much go practice it in your homeland and stay the hell away from US! That goes for anyone who doesn't support what this Country was founded on….including the President…anyone can carry that title around but it takes a real leader to make that title stand for integrity, character and humility with a servants heart for his people…without apologizing or ridiculing his very country that put him in office in the first place!

People should be free from hardships no matter what their religion…The Muslims religion is founded on hate….I don't care what anyone says…read the Qur'an and look through history. The Christian religion is full of persecution, the Buddhists, Hindu's, the Baha'i religion, the naturalists….PICK ONE! They all have their fights and their problems and their imperfections….but our country, this country was founded and built on God….not a religion! It was founded by people that stood true to their faith and built their entire colonies around the church and what it stood for. Perfect? Hell no there are people in there….people suck sometimes….we are truly the lower animal!

    • Katt Moccio /

Just to be clear….Christianity is a religion….God is not! God is a relationship!! Just because there is the association of God with Christianity doesnt make God the supreme holy being….a religion. Wanted to clarify my statement ~ "this country was founded and built on God….not a religion!"

  36. This makes me so sad.

  37. I stand on "In GOD we trust," regardless of what pagan cowards try to run our nation founded on Christian principles.

  38. Sheri Smith /

Spreading Christianity is Constitutional. Proselytizing, spreading any religion but Islam, is only forbidden in Sharia Law. 45 of the State Constitutions protected the people from the government imposing laws against Christian sects, but nearly all of them required that the Governor must swear to be a "Protestant Christian." We have to speak out on this Sharia Law.

  39. I really do not understand how the email sent about the Operation Christmas Child program is showing intolerance to other religious groups. I thought this was a free country?, If certain individuals do not want to participate then they have the right to choose that. I strongly believe that as American citizens christian's and non-christian's, we need to stand up for our freedom because if programs like these are being attacked what makes us think that our other freedoms will not be next? I participate in operation Christmas child every year, and have supported the Grahams' ministry programs for years, they do not force their beliefs on anyone else, but instead let the individuals choose whether or not they want to freely receive the gift of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. All they are trying to do is give some hope to children in need at Christmas all over the world who have none. Why is that such a crime?

  40. This is unbelieveable and so sad! It is also dangerous for the Air Force to turn its back on America's Christian heritage. The military has become a social experiment since the Clinton administration, and the political correctness must be stopped! The lives of our men and women in the military have been put in danger and many have been killed needlessly! This is a sign of weakness, and as an Air Force veteran, I can't believe I now encourage young men and women NOT to join the military. Why put their lives in obvious danger? (Major Nidal Hissan/Fort Hood, TX). And now the Air Force Academy is too afraid to give to an honorable charity? This will backfire, just as it does for all organizations/people who turn their back on their Christian roots!

  41. Moslems are just jealous that when we Christians have a HOLIDAY people are happy, kids are happy we are not killing each other :)

Clearly, M. Whinestine (a deranged little Marxist marionette) is trying to undermine the US and all of its policies by making charity to the poor impossible. He is using the old and well worn Trotsky ploy of doing something and then covering himself by claiming that his enemy is doing what he is doing. Specifically, claiming that F.G. is "a total enemy of the Constitution". The science fiction part is that some people in positions of leadership agree with this brasshole. We are f^(%!#g doomed.

I pack boxes but have not been giving the shipping donation b/c of his salary. Now the organization will build a box for you for $35…….I can pack the box very full for about $10. I wish there was a similar program by a different charity such as Childfund.

the federal government must have a say abut how the education money is being used in our colleges and universities that we support by public money, I for one don't want any homosexual to influence my children and grand children who attend colleges and universities, and furthermore I want all personals who is responsible for this type of speeches in our education systems is to be fired immediately and band from entering into any educational facilities in the future. [make our schools free from strainge influances, drugs, and social ruins].
