A 14-year-old Florida student who hugged his friend was suspended as a result of his middle school’s zero-tolerance no-hugging policy, myFOXorlando.com reported.
Nick Martinez said he gave a quick hug to his best friend, a female student, between classes.
The public display of affection was spotted by the principal of Palm Bay’s Southwest Middle School, 74 miles southeast of Orlando. While the principal said he believed the hug was innocent, he brought the two students to the school’s dean, who penalized them with in-school suspensions.
According to the Southwest Middle School’s student handbook, students can receive a one-day out-of-school suspension for kissing, while students caught hugging or hand-holding are penalized with a dean’s detention or suspension.

Well u can't pray at the flag pole, u can't hug your friend, they don't even want u to hold hands u can rule out the no kissing part. They will have them walking around with blinder on, just to look in one direction.
Funny how we are so focused on keeping kids from hugging, but we can't focus on teaching them to read, write, add and subtract. And what does this teach them about the Bill of Rights? Remember that document? This is rediculous.
Wow, I feel so much safer knowing that these kids will not be doing that again! I mean, it could lead to life long friendships, knowing that someone has your back during difficult times, etc. Should they call in Janet Nonothing from the Odumo security team? Is this a National security issue? good grief.
It appears the problem is with "zero-tolerance" policies which ironically don't teach very much about critical thinking and living in the real world. In life we must learn to discern the difference between what is appropriate and what is not. Is a quick hug to a friend, male or female, appropriate in a school setting. I would say, yes, likely as appropriate as a smile or a touch on the arm. Is a quick kiss appropriate? Likely not, since that would be seen as romantic and perhaps something that parents might not want to take place at school. When choosing and imposing and enforcing rules in a school setting, it is important to be consistent, but when a rule seems unusually harsh, that's when people protest. Kids need to learn to show appropriate affection, and they need to report unwanted attention–even if it's just a touch on the wrong place of the body–or unsolicited and repetitive lewd behavior.
yes! this is very good for keeping hands off each other , for someone that doesn't have young children in this eara , it might be a joke, but kissing and hugging can lead to other sexuall, but if they are friends then they should keep each other distance.
people should take precaution , and respect other people after hugging I see many kids get physical , and other people will want to get hugged also and will take the wrong message.
What's next? A smile? This is pretty sick.

Well at least hugging hasn't been scientifically proven to do nothing like prayer has.
what a joke!
Yet another reason homeschooling is awesome.

ALL PARENTS NEED TO TELL KIDS TO HUG AT SCHOOL.
