“The 5 S’s of Wine” Series: Smelling Wines

Tracy Byrnes Headshot

The Wine with Me podcasts are continuing our venture into the 5 S’s of wine: See. Swirl. Smell. Sip. Savor.

Today, we smell.

I’m Tracy Byrnes, Fox Business anchor and Wine With Me columnist, and let me tell you, it’s not rude to smell your glass of wine – even at a restaurant. Because if it smells like dirty gym socks, it may actually be spoiled and you shouldn’t drink it.

And you also need to smell the wine to enjoy the full taste. Try holding your nose and swishing some wine in your mouth. Then try it without holding your nose. See? Huge difference.

Le Nez Du Vin

Our Jedi master of wine – Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan (@jediwinemaster) – is back and she’s going to make me stick my big Italian nose into a glass and really smell it.

She brought this fancy smelling kit called the Le Nez du Vin, which will run you about $400, but it has all these little vials of scents that you can train your nose to get to know.

You can also just walk around your house and start smelling some stuff.

Everyone has a vanilla candle. Grab a green pepper, some berries…maybe some dried mushrooms? Oh, and you need a rock – and you probably should wash it because you’re going to have to lick it!

I’m serious. And if I can lick a rock for the good of my wine education you can too!

So blow your nose and go get your stuff.
