A school district on Long Island makes breathalyzers part of this year's prom.
FOX News Radio's Jeff Monosso reports from New York:
Smithtown, New York breaking out breathalyzers to crack down on students drinking at events like the prom.
(School Official) "Once the students know that the devices are there, that's the deterrent enough."
School officials siting success other schools have had with breathalyzers. Punishment if caught drinking could include suspension and being banned from the graduation ceremony. Some parents think it's a good idea.
(Parent) "These kids have no conception of getting in a car. They think they're invincible. Maybe they'll think twice about it."
But opponents think breathalyzers leave open the possibility that students could get false positives. Plus the drinking usally happens after prom is over.
