Teachers Told Not to Bow Heads, Pray in Public
A Tennessee school district is under fire after a group of middle school football coaches were reprimanded for bowing their heads during a post-game prayer and teachers were warned to hide from students if they chose to pray during a nationally organized prayer event.
Follow Fox’s Todd Starnes on Twitter.
Sumner County school officials sent guidelines to staff members in advance of today’s “See You At the Pole” prayer event. Christian teenagers around the nation are gathering around their campus flag poles before class to pray for their schools, the nation and each other.
“When a teacher or administrator participates in events such as See You at the Pole, it is possible for a student to confuse a teacher or administrator’s personal speech with their official speech,” read a portion of the guidelines obtained by The Tennessean.
Teachers have not been banned from praying, but if they do – it must be done out of sight and earshot of students, the newspaper reported.
Sumner County school officials declined multiple requests for interviews.
“To tell the teachers that they cannot attend ‘See You At The Pole,’ which occurs before school hours, just doesn’t seem to be constitutional,” David Landrith, pastor of Long Hollow Baptist Church, wrote on his blog. “This is the United States of America.”
Landrith said he is a “pro-school” pastor and typically doesn’t get “fired-up” about politics. However, he decided to speak out once he began hearing reports that rights of Christian students and teachers have been under attack.
“Teachers have expressed to me that it is being communicated to them that they cannot do certain things: things like wear or display a cross, have a Bible on their desk in their office, have Scripture verses displayed in their personal work space, listen to Christian music in their office, or participate in a prayer at a Christian organization such as FCA or Bible study,” Landrith said.
He also alleged that one high school has forbidden students from handing out fliers about a Bible Study.
“You can’t ban people from practicing their faith in the marketplace – whether it’s a Muslim, Buddhist, or a Christian. Christianity should not be favored over other religions. However, Christians should have the same rights as everyone else.”
The prayer warning came just days after a group of football coaches at Westmoreland Middle were reprimanded after they joined their players for a student-led post-game prayer in the end zone.
The coaches were summoned to the principal’s office after someone witnessed the coaches bowing their heads – and notified school authorities.
“The idea that a coach or teacher cannot bow their head out of respect for student-led prayer is, quite frankly, ridiculous,” Landrith wrote.
However, an attorney for the school district told Fox News Radio there is not a ban on teachers or coaches bowing their heads.
“They were not told to not bow their heads,” David French, an attorney with the American Center for Law and Justice. “They were reminded that student-led events must remain student-led. Teachers cannot give the appearance of endorsing the student’s message.”
The school’s new policy prohibits staff members from engaging in “any conduct that creates an appearance of endorsement of the organization’s or club’s messages or ideas.”
The policy was written in response to a lawsuit filed last May by the American Civil Liberties Union, alleging the school district has endorsed Christianity and violated the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The American Center for Law and Justice is representing the school district in the lawsuit. The ACLU declined to comment for this story.
“This whole tempest is the poisonous fruit of the ACLU tree,” French said, suggesting the school system is being especially cautious in light of the lawsuit. “It’s easy to imagine in a scenario where they are dealing with this incredibly aggressive attack from the ACLU that a public prayer would cause people to question it.”
The four coaches who bowed their heads were required to sign a letter stating that they understood the school’s policy. French said it was not a formal reprimand.
“There was no admonition against bowing,” he said. “They were asked to sign their understanding of school board policy regarding student participation.”
However, according to a copy of the letter obtained by Fox News Radio, the coaches were threatened with losing their positions of they violated the policy.
“If I fail to follow board policy, then I realize that I will not be allowed to serve as a coach,” the letter read.
So, are teachers and coaches allowed to simply bow their heads and join students in prayer?
“It’s a gray area,” French said. “It’s very contextual. With those guidelines in place, the staff members have to be cognizant of their surroundings and appearances and perceptions.”
The key, French said, is the student’s free speech rights.
“This is a policy that protects religious expression,” he said. “It doesn’t inhibit it.”
But that’s not how many Christians in the community feel about the rules.
“The House and Senate open with prayer,” he said. “The White House sponsors a National Day of Prayer,” Pastor Landrith said. “Good grief, even our presidents are sworn into office with their hands on a very visible Bible. But somehow in Sumner County our teachers cannot be a part of a student-led prayer effort?”

Pray for the few honest people among the ACLU. "Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and receive not of her plagues." Time is short. Pray that the few honest souls among the ACLU Christ-haters will see the light, repent, and be saved for eternal life. The Judgment of the ACLU–and many like them–is just around the corner. "The coming King is at the doors." It's time for the nations to wake up. The sky shall be parted as a scroll and the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, coming in the clouds of heaven, will descend in flaming fire and incontestable glory. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. So, pray for the ACLU that God will show many of them mercy, that they may receive grace before it is forever too late.

Where does the line end. Suppose if I (a teacher) attend a prayer event at a local park on Saturday where students from my school go to play, do I now have to hide in the shadows? Because I don't stop being their teacher or a school district employee on Saturday. If a student sees me "their teacher" walk into a church on Sunday isn't that an endorsement for religion? Do I now have to go in the back door? See You At the Pole is not during school hours, teachers are there voluntarily. How far we have come as a nation from Thomas Jefferson never missing chuch held at the Senate every Sunday or Ben Franklin calling for prayer before the Constitutional Convention. Those crazy deists.

People don't understand what their rights really are so they let themselves be bullied and threatened into comforming.
To the body of Christ: LET'S REMEMBER THAT ALL OF THIS IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE PLACE AND IT'S ONLY
GOING TO GET WORSE AND WE NEED TO BE SURE TO KEEP OUR EYES AND HEARTS ON GOD. WHILE
WE SHOULD ALL BE STANDING ON THE WORD AND NOT BACKING DOWN FROM OUR FAITH…WE ALSO
NEED TO STAY CLEAR OF GETTING SIDE TRACKED BY THE PLOYS OF THE enemy TO KEEP US SO BUSY
FIGHTING EVERY LITTLE BATTLE THAT WE MISS WHAT REALLY MATTERS. THOSE WHO HAVE EARS TO HEAR(LOL) WILL
UNDERSTAND.

Let's face it. We have allowed lawyers free reign in making money over anything that can be perceived as violating the rights of others. Take the power away from the lawyers and let's all be equally offended as it should be. Rights should be for every one, not just the ignorant. Our schools are under attack from lawsuits, not atheists. If there were no money to be gained, no one could force prayer out of the classroom.

Free speech only applies if you don't get seen by a student? That is one of the most insane, obvious discrimination reports that I have ever read. Tennessee used to be a significant state by standing up for free speech. How can our children ever learn right from wrong if we tell their teachers that you can't do anything that might be misunderstood by a student? A teacher has more rights than a student simply because we must teach children to respect older and more experienced people. Anyone doubt that kids think we are hypocritical in our lives? How can we possibly allow the ingrates to run things when they have no idea on how or why we exist? Shame on Tennessee and the folks who dump such garbage on people who must be respected for their dedication and willingness to take on the task of growing our children in to responsible adulthood.

It is now time for the masses to counter the ACLU with a class action lawsuit. The ACLU seem to protect the minority and not the majority.

The greatest lesson these teachers and coaches can give here is to simply stand up for their convictions. If bowing your head in prayer will get you fired, you must decide which is more important. Can a school district fire all of it's Christian teachers at once? What would the school officials do if the entire football staff threatened to step down in the middle of a season? What if the entire athletic program stood up against them? What if businesses stopped advertising at the football field and the gym. The school board only has as much power as the public gives them. It's time to start taking some of that power back.

People should be allowed to pray when ever and where ever they want regardless of their religious beliefs. If they aren't hurting anyone or infringing on someone else's rights, what's the problem. I pray at work all the time-alone, with co-workers, silently, out loud, in email. Prayer is essential to my day and spiritual well-being. Other people should have the same luxury all ready allocated to them in our US Constitution. Does anyone even read that anymore???

Wow, I sure hope that those students are strengthened by what they see around them and not allow the establishment to weaken their beliefs. Christians need to be alert to this suttle form of harrassment and removal of rights under the consitution. It is hard enough to find good, solid examples of men for our young men to up to and this school sees fit to admonish them. I would look for work elsewhere. We have a hard enough time keepign good teachers in the profession and we wonder why. Its amazing that right now a man in Iran is willing to lose his life for being a Christian. Christians need to wake up and stand up!

Oh for pittys sake, just because a person wants to say God Bless America, or say a simple prayer, God forbid these hypocrites for having us taking our precious Heavenly Father out of our schools, I remember back in school, I resisted the pledge of allegance to the flag every morning, I remember saying everything that schools now adays dont allow. WAKE UP AMERICA! our Country is to be founded under God, not under the authority of man. so for that… GOD BLESS AMERICA! not ashamed if I cause someone to dislike my post. but face it. or you will face the Holy God at your judgment!!!

I recently read that, if you live in the state of California and choose to have a Bible study, you have to register with the state in order to do so. That sounds remarkably like what Christians have to do in China. Christians are maligned in the media, in the nationally syndicated television programs, in the education system, the same tactic that has been used since time immemorial to bring about hatred and prejudice is being employed : ostracization, us versus them. Because we believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation and eternity with God in a time where belief in anything other than all religious paths leading to heaven, we are hated. Those that are intolerant are blind to their own intolerance.
If you honestly believe that during this downward spiral of our nation's morality and tolerance that things are going to "go back to the way they were," you are sadly mistaken. Disbanding the ACLU is not going to happen. The day will come that those of us that believe will be forced to register with whatever government that's in power and we will be limited in movement and in rights. If you want your children to be educated properly, educate them at home. You're not going to see permanent policy change in the American school system and you're not going to get an apology.

At the American Cult Libertarian University (ACLU) they are trained to endorse all religions except Christianity. Christainity cannot be acknowledged because that implies certain rights, authority and status. And to that- the ACLU cannot tolerate. That, in my opinion, is the distinguishing difference between acknowledgement and endorsement. It is time for them to go. Period.

Who said we were losing? Lawyers like to fight over this. Being a Christian (A follower of Christ's teachings) we understand that this is what happens. Lawyers were always trying to trap Jesus in these very kinds of things. Read the story of the Good Samaritan Luke chapter 10. As American's we are shocked that we have come so far from our history as a nation built on religious freedom. And all you have proven being a Deist is that you label and lump all Christians "on the whole" you don't know me you don't know how I treat others. yet you are so sure that I am interested in what others are doing wrong? I am surely interested in the wrong being done here. How do you separate who you are from what you do? Why should we expect these people to stop practicing their faith? On their own time? And WHO turned them in? Isn't that the question here? These people who get offended when Christians practice their faith openly, do they read all of our Constitution? Do they know the price that was paid defending it? If we are accused in this country we have the right to stand before our accusers! The cowards who start all of this need to come out of the dark shadows and face the people that they are hurting.

Southern Christians???? I find you to be the ignorant one sir. Meeting in public to pray does not shove Christianity down anyones throat…it is excercising our right in this country TO pray. We all say we want the right to do and speak as we please but how short-sighted we are when it comes to extending that right to others. Daniel, "people" aren't just going to correct this Marxist assertion of yours that the state must uphold godlessness, but Patrick Henry himself, you know, the guy who said "give me liberty,or give me death".
But you probably think of him as a "racist elitist old white slaveowner",huh?
The first amendment DOES NOT stipulate "separation of church and state" it stipulates that the government may not adopt an official religion and then force it down everyone's throat -AND THIS INCLUDES ATHEISM.
You people are as bad as the Monarchs of England were- demanding that people subject themselves to your beliefs in public.
People HAVE THE RIGHT to express themselves -AND THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS- anywhere they please.
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom to worship here."

You are showing a bias against Christians in general, but mostly an ignorant bias against those of us living in the south. Mr. McDowell,
I understand you said "most" southern Christians, but let me say that "most" of these southern christians, myself included, are very open to people practicing other religions. No matter where they're at. Freedom of religion is highly reguarded, and as a member of the U.S. military, I take pride to protect these rights. You, good sir, simply make yourself look like you know nothing of the south. Whether someone's Christian, Islamic, Jewish, or Buddhist, it doesn't matter, we're all human, and have the right to practice whatever religion without getting shot for it. That's what makes this country a whole. As far as your comment about no religion in public education, you must've forgotten that this is one nation under GOD. If it were the 40's, everyone would still be saying daily prayers each day before school. It's a shame that this country has come to this. Mainly because of people like you. Thanks.

If you understand the God of the Bible and the god of the Koran, they are not the same thing. Christians pray to a God who is personable, is knowable through Jesus Christ. Christians believe God is One God manifested in three distinct personalities, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians worship the One true God who does not force Himself on us. Muslims believe in a god who is more like a force and is unknowable. They deny Jesus Christ as God and believe their Allah is not three persons. The Christian God became one of us while the Islamic god did not. So know, we do not pray to the same god. Southern Christians are not ignorant, you are! Saying otherwise is like calling a blue ball blue and a red ball red and saying they arethe same color. They are not.

thank you for calling me an ignorant southern christian. However, as most christians around here do, we do not pray to the same god that muslims do simply because they pray to Allah and we pray to God. As far as letting Islamic prayers go, I have no problem with their praying because it is their right to pray to whoever they believe in because that is called America. America allows you to worship or not worship as you see fit. This case however is not about that. This case is about infringing on the teachers personal right and freedom to pray and worship.

2nd Part…They are not the government they just work for the government and therefore can do whatever they want to do with their religious FREEDOM. The school system can say that the teachers cannot use their classrooms to preach or cannot allow only christian material in the classroom but they cannot tell them that they can't pray and that is per the 1st Ammendment of the Constitution which has nothing to do with Separation of Church and state but states that the government cannot pick one religion over another. We honestly don't know who those teachers were praying to so we cannot say they were praying to God, Allah, or Buddha for that matter. We are ignorant if we think we can control peoples lives like that.

Hi Daniel.
Interesting comment. The Muslim god is not the same as the Christian God. To the Muslims, their god says it is OK to kill Jews and treat any non-Muslim as an infidel. Yet, the Christian God says to love your enemy and to do good to those who mistreat you! Either God is crazy or they are NOT the SAME GOD! I think it is OBVIOUS which is true.
