School Reading List Includes Lesbian Sex, Gay Orgy
A New Jersey school district has apologized to parents after requiring high school students to read books that include graphic depictions of lesbian sex and a homosexual orgy.
“Some of the language is inappropriate,” said Chuck Earling, superintendent of Monroe Township Schools in Williamstown, NJ. “We were not trying to create controversy. We were just trying to get students to read.”
The books were on a required reading list for middle school and high school students.
“There were some words and language that seemed to be inappropriate as far as the parents and some of the kids were concerned,” he said.
One book, “Norwegian Wood,” was on a list for incoming sophomores in an honors English class. The book included a graphic depiction of a lesbian sex scene between a 31-year-old woman and a 13-year old girl, according to a report first published in the Gloucester County Times.
“I don’t think that’s relevant for any teenager,” parent Robin Myers told the newspaper. Her daughter was assigned to read the book.
“I was just kind of in shock,” she said.
The other book in question was “Tweak: Growing up on Methamphetamines.” That book included depictions of drug usage and a homosexual orgy.
“That has created a controversy,” Earling told Fox News Radio, referring to the drug usage – along with the lesbian and gay sex scenes. “We’ve pulled them from our summer reading list.”
Peter Sprigg, with the Family Research Council, said he’s not surprised by the controversy surrounding the books.
“Here we see the intersection of parental values being offended, the hyper-sexualization of our youth and the homosexual agenda being pushed,” Sprigg told Fox News Radio. “This just illustrates why a lot of American parents are not willing to entrust their children to the public schools anymore.”
“There is this tolerance of sexually explicit material that is very troubling and should be very troubling for parents,” he said.
•
So whose idea was it to put books featuring explicit sex scenes on a summer reading list for teenagers?
Earling said the school district’s summer reading list was prepared by a committee made up of teachers, librarians and school administrators. The board of education ultimately approved the list.
“They read the books,” he said. “They didn’t feel it was inappropriate based on the language that’s used, common language used on the street.”
The superintendent said students have seen more graphic things on television or in the movies – and noted that only about a dozen people actually complained.
As a result of the controversy, Earling said they are going to rework their summer reading list to include a rating system for books. And he also said that in the future, they will include parents on the reading list committee.
Sprigg called on parents across the nation to pay close attention to what their children are being encouraged to read.
“To a large extent the educational community and the library community have come under the control of very radical liberal ideology with regard to sexuality and they view anything that might remotely be called censorship as the ultimate evil,” Sprigg said. “Exposing children to graphic sexual content – that is not as evil as censorship in the minds of some leftwing activists.”

Another fine example of the establishment of teaching knowing what is better for a child then the parent. This school board and adminstators should be voted out.

I say, parents get your guns and start shooting all of those who go against the moral principles we were taught, by our parents, when we were growing up… that's right, shoot all of them and don't stop until you killed all of them! Catch them in the Malls, restaurants or any other place… KILL THEM!

Since WHEN is it not a sexual offense when a 31 year old and a 13 are engaged in sex? If it were a 31 year old man and 13 year old girl I am sure this book would have never made it through. Sounds like someone has an agenda.

Exactly yet most articles dont even mention the fact that this part is totally illegal. What would happen if in this school a 31 year old teacher does 'hook' up with a 13 year old and the 13 year old states she thought it was alright since they were told to read that book????

Not just homosexual problems but drug use and pedophilia. It takes a sick mind to promote this stuff to kids.

You must have lost your mind! A 31 year old on a 13 year old? This is completely crazy! Orgy? Meth use? THIS is what you get when you let those liberals make you feel bad about being discrimminating. You have your own judgement about things. trust them. Do not feel bad about creating your limits and holding those against these creeps trying to justify un-natural behaviors. I wait for the day when my kids have to read complete crap like this in an attempt to feed this nasty, un-natural and perverse sub-culture. You must have lost your minds!

School boards do not closely monitor for censorship …
Pledge of Allegiance
Prayers at Graduation
Christian Clubs
Military Saches
Crosses
all of these items are frowned upon, if not banned

And none of these are morally objectionable like graphic depictions of drug abuse, pedophilia, and graphic descriptions of sex being presented to minors. Is there not an ample supply of books that provide literary growth without overt sex and drugs? There was when we were in school!

READ THIS FIRST, CRITICS! I am a Democrat. I am a Christian. I do not believe that homosexuality is a Christian lifestyle. I have a number of close friends who have chosen to live such a lifestyle, and, while I do not condone that as a Christian, I love them just the same. I have no problem with them being around my kids – why in the world should I? I have taught my kids that other kids' parents may look a little different than us (i.e., two moms/two dads) but that they love their kids the same, and even though we don't believe the Bible teaches this to be right, Jesus tells us that we don't have any right at all to treat them badly, exclude them, whisper about them, etc.
I am not against middle and high school kids knowing that the homosexual lifestyle is a real thing, nor am I against the inclusion of characters with this lifestyle. What I am against is graphic sexual content being endorsed by schools, or being endorsed by ANYONE to kids. Who cares that they may see worse in their personal lives?! They're underage, impressionable little minds that cannot yet properly put those acts in appropriate context. I mean, please, why don't we just send them home with a list of p o r n sites to check out over the summer? Because once any of them find this exciting to read, that's exactly what they're going to be looking up on their computers.
Also, the fact that only a dozen or so parents complained is probably only because a dozen or so either scanned the books themselves or were informed by their kids of the content. One should not think it's because the other several thousand sets of parents were okay with p o r n on the required summer reading list. And, not to put too fine a point on my position here, but I would feel this way about graphic heterosexual content, equally.

If you are a Christian – you must have forgotten that the Bible is required reading for you ! Hate the sin -not the sinner … OK , I got it.
But the Bible also says that as a Christian . you are to have nothing to do with those that are sexually immoral (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
So where is your "disconnect" ? They teach this crap to the kids in schools , then parents and teachers seem freaked out when the kids ACT out. BTW – there is no such thing as 2 mommies or 2 daddies being parents. Since it is physiologically impossible – you're feeding your kids a flat out lie. It is – as you said , "a chosen lifestyle".
Political correctness be damned , right along with the "gay agenda"
in the school system. It doesn't belong there.

"What I am against is graphic sexual content being endorsed by schools, or being endorsed by ANYONE to kids." And any book with sexual scenes and undertones in High School literature? "Brave New World"? "Wuthering Heights"? "Handmaid's Tale"? "The Mists of Avalon"? "Midsummer Night's Dream"? One of the books that was removed from the High School class was "Norwegian Wood", adapted from a venerated novel of love and mental illness written in Japan in the 80's – a book that has inspired a very significant level of devotion. The book is a dark, classic coming of age story with an Eastern twist, depicting a character who is dealing with the suicide of a close friend. The book (and a subsequent film) has even passed Chinese censorship and is available there.
Another book removed was "Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines" – a harrowing story of a young boy who loses himself to heavy drug abuse and almost loses himself, only to find hope and turn his life around. This book is manic and honest and very, very candid and depicts the self-saving strength of the human spirit…
You would call these two equivalent to pornography? You're all being so incredibly "Footloose".

If you read Tweak, you would know that he doesn't turn his life around, he continues on his path of destruction, doing anything (including homosexual acts) to pay for his drug of choice. This is a real life issue, sure, but I would prefer to talk to my kids about drug use myself, and at the time I feel is appropriate. I don't want it forced on them in Middle School. Parents know their kids better than anyone and know when they are mature enough to handle topics such as this.

I think school children should be required to have at least one homosexual encounter in order to graduate. Nothing is too extreme. It's absolutely imperative that we force homosexuality down the throats (no pun intended) of our children, at the youngest possible age. Demand it NOW!!!!!

These books shouldn't have been part of the reading list for students of that age, but there are many on the religious right who don't want children reading anything the least bit positive of homosexuality or gays. In fact, a state senator in Alabama proposed such a long in school libraries. Any positive portrayl of gays would be banned.

Psychiatrists in England are now trying to figure out how to make pedophilia acceptable to the general public, just as homsexuality has become, to a degree, acceptable. Their first move is to try and get all pedophiles out of jail since they don't regard it as a crime. God help the United States and the rest of the civiized world. Glad I won't be around much longer to see the results of society out of control.

Wow almost every reporter on this story and comments on here have missed the main point of that one book. It says a 31 year old woman and a 13 year old girl. Doesnt matter what the school thinks, what the parents think, or even what the community thinks. I believe that is illegally everywhere in this country. And I think in some states the penalty is life in prison with that much age difference. And I also think that talking that way to certain age kids is also illegal in some states. It would be funny if some young prosecutor got ahold of this and placed charges against the school board members.

The school board pulled the material from the list because of the controversy, not the content. Perhaps parents should demand to be included in such decisions. Then again, many are too "busy" to be involved in their children's lives until after something happens.

Trying to put camel's nose under tent, then lobby, fund complicent pols, give teachers a mind rinse, remove parental rights, enlist gay experts, trust us and weep at childs future. Pay attention and get involved, kids trust you and will love you for truth told, not soft bromides that skirt the truth of sexuality, or more importanly the love of a man and a woman.

I totally agree! If they are to graduate with honors there should be documented evidence, in book form, so that all can read it, and they
should be valedictorians! I am so glad I no longer attend school!

I am a lesbian and a conservative and I think it's ridiculous. Parents should be the only people with a say on what kind of adult material that they're children are exposed to. If I were a parent I would be one of the ones complaining. I wouldn't want my own child reading it. Once a child graduates from high school and turns 18 then they can make that choice themselves.

So…this was reviewed and PASSED as ok by Monroe Township teachers, administrators, and Board members? Ok, since they were all proud and happy for Williamstown 7th graders to read this slop…mandatory reading…I believe that they should all be happy and proud to allow their full name and address to be published also! I can't wait to see what the reaction of these persons would be if a county judge forced the release of that reading as mandatory for all of the parents and students of the school district!

I guess this is just another example why our public schools preparing our children for the future. Teachers who are having sex with students you could say small part of sex education and this is the same system who has what is known as tenure, when children in grades 5 to 12 are having difficulty with reading writing mathematics science and yes even history so what if the children's and United States are able to compete with other students in mathematics science reading and writing so what just maybe they'll score highest in sex education or even How to apply a needle to administer their addiction for themselves, most kids at that age can tell y'all about the different illegal drugs that's in the area. Who cares about preparing the children put tomorrow job market. I mean we need teachers teaching and demonstrating the proper sex education because so many parents I'm able to talk to their children concerning sex and drug abuse. And I'm sure parents, teachers, PTA, Board of Education and if I left anyone out excusing are really excited to know that they are preparing the children for the future. Sorry is what the administration has to say. To this lesbian woman I am a taxpayer and what's included in my property tax is amount of money I am required to pay for public schools if you think it's not my business or my concern and I shouldn't have to pay for people's children to learn about homosexuals or which drug I should be using or how to minister a needle. If you're going to take my money than I think it's only right that the children learn how to read right, mathematics, English and regardless of what you may think English is not a dirty word and science. What next orgies. When it comes to sex education and drugs let the parents teach their children, when it comes to sexual preferences that should be up to the child and the parents not the school. In today's world a child must learn many things to help preparing a child for tomorrow's jobs.

If parents would take a more active role in their children's education, controversies like this wouldn't arise. If this came home to me on my child's reading list, I would let her choose what she wanted to read, but I would certainly read it first. If I deemed it inappropriate, would prefer she choose another title. However, if she did indeed wish to read the book, I would be prepared to discuss it with her as well. I am not qualified in saying what is right and wrong as far as education goes, but I do keep an open mind because our children will be exposed to almost everything. Having information is invaluable and the more we keep the lines of communication open, the better off our children will be.

It is your job to protect your child from being exposed to anything harmful and these subjects are harmful to children!!! Your child is not able to distinguish all harmful things, we are suppose to train them, protect them. Education is to teach them to read, write, do math, understand science not to expose them to the perversions of this world.

This is basically porn, statutory rape of a minor so to give a list of these books to minors suggesting they are a good summer read is nothing more than a crime. SEVERAL crimes in fact. If any of us had walked into a book store and bought those for our children we would be reported to CPS for porn materials to minors. In fact- since these are porn books- they are actually illegal for anyone under 18 to own, read, process, etc.
BTW- I called my local school system about a couple of the books mThth grader brought home and I was told they were not aware of any problems but NOPE- no teacher actually has read any of the books on the list to have suggested them (and these kids were supposed to be reading for HS credits) So I had to buy, pre-read each of the books I thought my son would like.

SInce when is it the schools job to teach anyone or anything related to homosexuality. That is a sociatial issue, and has no business at all in schools. That issue should totally be left up to parents to educate their children. As you put it, the "religious right", well what about the liberal left and the gay and lesbian organizations that stop at nothing to push their agenda's down everyone elses throats! How bout just keep it to yourself. My child shouldnt have to have it force fed to them about homesexuals! Thats my business to teach them what is right and wrong not the schools or some lesbian or gay agenda pusher!
